Kilbannon or kilbarron help please
« on: Tuesday 20 January 09 00:00 GMT (UK) »
hi after years of trying to find out where my great grandfather was born i have succeeded with a little help from the 1911 census.
his name was Patrick O'Neill born c1849 in Kilbannon Co Galway.
On his marriage cert in 1872 (first sighting of him in england) he gives his fathers name as patrick o'neill and his fathers occupation as Farmer.
Do youthink there is a chance i might now be able to find his birth or family now  that i have his place of birth
any help or advice would be much appreciated
thanks linda

Hi Linda, think I maybe going to stick a spanner in your works when I say Kilbarron Co Galway hits on the boarders of Tipperary by Lough Dery so when you come to Parish hunting for a links or info do bare  in mind it could also come under Co Tipperary I'm not sure but I think the larges town to it maybe Portumna,I've not had a chance to check Griffiths Valuation but I wonder if his father Patrick could be listed as he was a Farmer, sorry this info isn't much ,regards Nipy

Neill           Patrick          Pollacorragune       Kilbennan     Galway

there are the following oneills in kilbennan

O'Neill         John             Mullagh              Kilbennan     Galway
O'Neill         Martin           Mullagh              Kilbennan     Galway

what do you think about the surname oneill being neill ? has anyone any ideas how i could find out anymore about these findings

Hi Linda----wish someone with a bit of info would come along here & help you out! Have you tried to get to view the parish records for Kilbennan (or get someone to do a look up for you) see if you get any leads there+ what about the 1901 census as Patricks father Patrick may still be alive on that one & you may get some more clues from that ,well worth a try, regards Nipy
