Just to echo the other replies, my family were also from that area. There was high infant mortality. My GGGGrandad had 18 children and eleven of them died before their 9th birthdays! Sorcha

Oh - that's really sad :(

Did most people there work nearby? What were the works that were there?

Hi Treegirl, the works you could see in the photo were mainly steel works. My grandfather was a steel moulder and spent all his working life there. There were also coke producing plants there as well. The area now is partly occupied by the Meadowhall Shopping Centre.

Hi  yes a foundry labourer would work in one of the many steel works  that area was also popular with railway workers. My Grandfather and Father were from there I still live on the outskirts of Sheffield now thankfully it is not as built up now as it was looking at the photo in 1920.
