1841 &51 Census lookup help needed for Peter Cray b1811. please!
« on: Wednesday 21 January 09 06:17 GMT (UK) »
Hello,
Could someone please help with a Census look-up for Peter Cray, born we think at St Cuthberts Edinburgh, Midlothian County, Scotland in 1811. We think that we have found his marriage date of Oct 15 1830 to Christina Adams (we know this name is correct fromthe DC of their daughter, Jane, here in Australia)  I'd love to know the other children of Peter and Christina, as we think that there may have been a sister Elizabeth, and perhaps a brother William. Jane Cray arrived in Australia in 1852, and sadly, died quite young.
Any other information regarding the Cray family from Edinburgh would be just wonderful.
Many thanks, Rap.

Hi Rap,

There are three recorded children for Peter and Christian/Christina on ScotlandsPeople (http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk). They are:

Elizabeth Lawrie Cray - born 21/12/1830 St Cuthberts, Edinburgh
Christian Cray - bapt. 19/11/1835 Glasgow
Agnes Cray - born 6/3/1838 Barony (Glasgow)

The index record of Agnes' birth notes she was child number 4. Could Jane have been born between sisters Elizabeth and Christian?

hume :)

Thanks so much to you both....this is wonderful information!
I can only assume Sylvia that the sir-name is Cray rather than Gray....as it appears in the family bible and on Jane's death certif as Cray.
And yes, Jane's birthdate is 1832, as she died at the age of 57 in 1890 from what is described as 'Cerebral Softening' ???...not too sure what that would mean without an autopsy...any idea? This would make her the second of the four children, but I couldn't find any record of her death anywhere.
I'm thrilled to find that she is buried at the Melbourne General Cemetery....not far from me, and I plan to find her grave and pay tribute to one gutsy Scottish Lass!
Thanks to your help, I hope to track down family of her siblings! Great fun!

Many kind thanks to you all, and best wishes,
Rap.
