Woodcocks in Worksop
« on: Wednesday 21 January 09 19:31 GMT (UK) »
Hi i'm trying to trace my Woodcock family who lived in Worksop, my mum (a woodcock before she married) recently found an old suitcase in the loft and there is loads of stuff with Worksop written all over it - photos, letters, church things. Where do i start?

Hi,

I have just looked down the phone book, and there are no Woodcocks living at any farms in, or near worksop.

Hope that helps!

I've just looked on FreeBMD and there's a Philip Woodcock listed but his date is Dec 1/4 1917, Worksop, could that be him? if so then he died quite young.  It lists his mothers maiden name as Fowler.

There's also 2 other children whose mothers maiden is Fowler - Gertrude A, born Sept 1/4 1912 and Janet, Sept 1/4 1922.

If this them, then their parents were George Woodcock and Gertrude Fowler who were married March 1/4 Sept 1910, Worksop.

All ifs and buts, but, if this is the correct family then George appears on the 1901 Census with his parents and sibling at 147 Eastgate Worksop. Samuel his younger brother was aged 9 in 1901.  The 1901 census shows that John was from Eakring and Mary from Walesby.

George was baptized 25.12.1888, s/o John & Mary. At the time of his birth the family were living at 29 Eastgate and John was a maltster.

If this is them, the John & Mary Clark were married in Worksop on 24.1.1888.

Hope this helps to get you started, or maybe I'm sending you in completely the wrong direction, let's hope not. If I'm right, then you'll need certificates to validate all of this though.

If you have any more info in your suitcase let us know and we'll see what else we can find out.

That sounds right he died when my mum was 15 of skin cancer... hence why i don't know much about the family! I know i had a great aunt Janet

Cousin Roger's farm is between worksop and retford somewhere, i remember going to it when i was very young!

Thank you... i'm going to google free BMD

most of the farming area between Worksop and Retford was classified as bing at Ranby... which can cause issues - if the farm was at Ranby it also be classed as a part of Blyth. and visa versa...

... and the farm could be at Blyth, Ranby, Styrrup, Oldcoates, Carlton, Barnby Moor etc etc etc. However, I live at Blyth and I know a number of ex ag.labs. and currrent farmers who would know who he is/was. If you can provide a little more detail on Cousin Roger, Sunshine, I'll see what I can dig up.
