I have looked for Charlotte under the name BUTLER in the 1881 census, the most likely one is Married to a Richard BUTLER who is head of the household, but the most interesting thing is that in the same household, but on the next page, is his mother-in-law Mary A. REYNOLDS.
RG11/622/115/1 & 2

I have not yet found a REYNOLDS /BUTLER marriage.

I have also looked for the births of the two elder children from the 1891 census Fanny and Maggie, there are no BRUNGER births that fit, but there is a Fanny Eliza BUTLER born Lambeth 1882, also Margaret Ada or  Margaret Eliza BUTLER both born Lambeth 1884, these ages fit with Fanny and Maggie BRUNGER.

I think you need to look more closely into these people.

Thanks to Barbara and Jebber. You've given me food for thought and I'll do some more digging when I have some more free time. I must admit I hadn't found the entry for Alfred Brunger/Edward Martin in the 1901 census so will go have a look. More later I hope....

In the 1901 census Alfred Bunger age 11 born Brixton is living with Edward and Ellen Martin . He is again down as nephew . Living Park Place West Mews St Pancras

No sign of any other child

Barbara, where did you find this info? I looked on ancestry.co.uk and could not find any such entry for 1901. Also, the 1901 census website at http://www.findmypast.com/CensusPersonStartSearchServlet?censusYear=1901 throws up an error 500 when searching. Looks like a db problem.

Sorry I should have given you the details

RG13 piece 131 folio 147 page 41

I found it using Find my Past but if you put Alfred BUNGER / birth place BRISTON(another Ancestry mistranscription) and birth date 1890 into Ancestry , it should come up. I just tried it and it was OK

Ok so now I've read the thread properly and noticed the mis-spelling of the surname I see what you see  ::) I now have the transcript of the 1901 census.

I still have problems with the 1901 census search at http://www.findmypast.com/CensusPersonStartSearchServlet?censusYear=1901 which blows up with an error 500. Do you have the same problem??

I now need to try and track down his twin sister Maud Ellen and research the other names mentioned here. This genealogy stuff can be a nightmare, especially if a name is written incorrectly or mis-transcribed  >:(
