1803 Army of Reserve Index- Clarks in Rye
« on: Thursday 22 January 09 22:07 GMT (UK) »
Hello Amy K  Saw your offer in the Look ups board and hope  I'm doing this right.  Especially interested in Philip Clark b. 1787 in Rye.  He was supposed to be a seaman though.  Other Clarks in family were Richard  Henry John and Thomas multiples of each.  Patriarch of Family was Philip Clark the Elder  Mariner of Rye  1733-1806.  Thanks LizR

Hi, have you checked to see if he was a Sea Fencible rather than Militia. As a seaman it is more likely he joined them. Pete

Is there a website to check Sea Fencibles? Thanks for the suggestion but don't know how to check besides good old google.  Henry Clark1759-1832 was a landsman couldn't follow the family because of seasickness,

We have a booklet with the 1805 payroll for Sussex in. At Rye there was a John Clark paid for attendance Oct, Nov, Dec 1805 and a Phillip, on the role but not paid for any duties. Extracted from Nat Archives File ADM 28/46. Pete

Hi maybe Philip wasn't paid because he was only 18.  John was also a miller like Henry not a seaman.  Edward Clark 1790-1875 claimed to know The Duke of Wellington in an Illinois history in US.  I have found that Arthur Wellesley stayed in a house in Winchelsea at this time.  Edward would have been 16  Any record of the errand boys or horse holders.  How do I get the Booklet?  Thanks for your help.  LizR

If he was on the roll and attended duty he would have been paid, maybe he had just signed on. It was a secure method of avoiding the Press gangs or conscription. The Sea fencibles were charged with local defence only. I think the book was Sussex Family History, I got it on ebay. There is nothing on Clark other than what I quoted.
