Has anyone heard of Keyham Cemetery Devonport
« on: Thursday 10 February 05 21:01 GMT (UK) »
can anyone help?

My Grandma was buried in Keyham cemetery in March 1939.
Can anyone tell me whereabouts the cemetery is or if it no longer exists. I can't find any info about it.

Many Thanks

Janey

Hi there!
There was a Milehouse Cemetery, Plymouth,  which was cleared away in approximately 1959.  Remains and headstones were removed to Efford Cemetery Plymouth where they are placed in what is known as "The Sunken Garden".  The headstones have been placed all around the edge of the garden - some are legible others are not.  In the middle of the sunken garden is a memorial giving details of the removal and reinterment.
My great grandmother was interred in Milehouse Cemetery - hence my knowledge!
West Devon Records office at Clare Place, Coxside, Plymouth have in depth information on all the cemeteries and they can be contacted via their website.  Hope this information may be helpful to you.
Kind regards, Priscilla

hi there,
I saw this post and thought I would post a reply. I have just spoken to my father who tells me that the Keyham Cememtary Devonport is located at the Naval docks. From what he could remember it was near the entrance to the Keyham Naval Docks Gates, there is a road opposite these gates which leads to the cemetary. Hope this has been a help.

Hello again!
Babybels could well be on to something.  Being a Plymothian have done some more research and learned that there was a church in Keyham Road, Morice Town, Devonport, Plymouth - St James the Great - at the location that Babybels father remembers.
St James the Great suffered damage in WW2 and my husband remembers going to night school which was held there in connection with his apprenticeship days in the Dockyard.  Sadly the church is no longer in existence.  The congregation merged with St Michael's Church in Albert Road, Devonport - virtually just around the corner.
Without doubt if you email the West Devon Records Office in Plymouth on pwdro[at]plymouth.gov.uk they will come up with some information.  Other than that may I suggest you contact William Greaves-Stocker, Registrar, Plymouth - telephone 01752 306103 or email him at:-
williamgreaves-stocker[at]plymouth.gov.uk.
Would be most interested to hear how you get on Janey.
Good luck.
Priscilla.
