It's doubtful that they have survived as they tended not to be kept after a certain period of time.

You might be lucky though, and find something in the Quarter Sessions records at the Caernarfon Record Office. The QS usually had the Coroner's Returns which detailed their expenses, plus a list of inquests held. Not quite as good as the original records, but at least you might be lucky to find an ancestor in them.

Your best bet would be the local newspapers as they tended to carry reports of local inquests, sometimes in great graphic detail.

Thank you Keith for the information.

I will get in touch with Caernarfon Record Office.

Now, I just need to find which Carnarfon newspapers were in print in 1850's !

Your first port of call should be the Carnarvon & Denbigh Herald. The other well known newspapers for the area, Y Genedl Gymreig and Herald Cymraeg didn't appear until a few years later. you could also try the North Wales Chronicle, but its coverage for Pwllheli is not as good.

There may be other papers which served a much smaller area, which may carry more information. You can find details of these at:

Celia,

No I haven't yet found the coroners reports, due to events preventing me having the necessary time ;I too have the problem of not being able to read in Welsh!

The report I am looking for concerns the death of John Williams, aged 28, who died 16 May 1851 in an explosion at a quarry.

If you are able to help Celia, I would be most appreciative.

I have looked on the gale newspapers under the most common input but nothing came up at all for the 1850's.There  are many inputs you can use though, under different heading, takes some time though.I will do some more searching when time allows
What was the name if the slate quarry?
I did find a John Williams age 28 but he died  in a colliery Accident near Hollywell in 1863.I will let you know if i find anything and also look in other papers.Keep me posted if you find what your lookin for ;)

Celia,
Many thanks; the quarry/mine would have been in Llandwrog, Caernarvonshire, but don't yet know  it's name!
