WIL(L)BY Family of Walpole a huge brick wall
« on: Tuesday 27 January 09 02:47 GMT (UK) »
Hi listers, I am desperately seeking information on my 3rd great grandparents.
Benjamin Willby or Wilby and his wife Hepzibah, who I have been told has the maiden name of WINCUP but at this point is unconfirmed.

Benjamin was born about 1804 according to census records and Hepzibah about 1809.

Both were born in Walpole and that is where my info stops.
they went on to have 7 children, Hannah, Emily, Samuel, Eli, Joseph (my line) George and Elijah.

Benjamin died in 1871 and Hepzibah in 1887 again both in Walpole.
I have all census records for them from 1841 - 1881 but of course that does not give their parentage or Hepzibah's maiden name.  I cannot find a marriage record for them either.

Again I was told that Benjamins parents were John Willby and Phoebe Savage, but I cannot find any record of that either.

Is there someone who can help.  I have tried searching parish records etc, but to no avail.
cheers
Chris

I note that Hephzibah was born in Sibton - parish records not on familysearch for this time but there is an isolated entry for a Hetty bp.22/5/1814 Sibton to a John Whincup and Elizabeth Cook.

The Census would indicate that the Whincup/Whincop's are just one family and there is an Elizabeth bc.1776.

Have looked at the National Burial Index which would seem to confirm this theory and a John Wincop aged 47 was bur. 14/6/1818 Sibton (as was the Hetty noted above on 25/5/1814).

Looks like Hephzibah's parents were John and Elizabeth (noted likely siblings to be a James bc.1801, Robert bc.1811 and William bc.1796).

Think you need to check Sibton parish records now.

PS

Don't forget Walpole has one of the most famous non-conformist chapels in the whole county http://www.hct.org.uk/chapel4walpole.html and www.walpoleoldchapel.co.uk

The parish church can be seen at www.suffolkchurches.co.uk and there is an entry for the Independent Chapel too.

Hey Chris, I have just started researching my line, traced it back to Benjamin and Hepzibah....which brought me to this chat topic by chance.  Eli is my line.  I live in British Columbia, Canada....just wanted to say Hi, and thanks for the extra information.
