New to Scottish research!

Hi,
 I have only ventured north of the border once in 3 years family history!  A friend has asked me to help her find her roots and they are in Scotland.
I have her father's birth cert here and under his mother's name is the date 1913 July 18.  Would I be correct in thinking this is the marriage date? 

I have registered with Scotland's people but finding it difficult to get around.  Probably because I'm not used to it. 

At the moment I don't seem able to find anything!  Even the one that I have the cerificate for, there is not one in Kirkoswald.

I have found his sister I think Evelyn McLellan born 1912 County of Ayr
And the birth cert I have is for John McLellan Ferguson 28 May 1915
There should be an elder brother James born before John but I don't know where!

I think Evelyn may have been illegitimate as her surname is Mclellan.

The parents of these three were Joseph Morrison Ferguson (ploughman) and Evelyn McLellan and if the marriage date of 18 July 1913 is correct it may have been at Dalrymple.

If anyone can give me advice  on how to go about finding more I should be very grateful.

Hi there

Not sure why you're not seeing the entry on SP for John.  It's appearing in the index as:

1915 FERGUSON JOHN MCLELLAN M KIRKOSWALD /AYR 601/00 0014

Of course since these records you're searching are all in the Modern Indexes (ie past the 100 year cut off) then you won't be able to view and download a digital copy online.  You can opt to order an extract right from the SP site but that would be a bit redundant in your case since you already have a copy!

It does sound like the date you mention is a wedding date but I'm not finding one in the indexes even when using wildcards.  That could be several things....it's been missed from the records by SP, the informant made up a marriage date to appear married, they truly were married and it was never properly recorded...as in the case of an irregular marriage.  Which would have been perfectly legal regardless...just doesn't help you now in learning their parents names and all that!!

You didn't mention but did the parents of John die outside of Scotland?  If not their death certificates will contain info on their parents if the informant at the time knew the info.

which is veiwable on SP.

You should be off and running with this info....both sets of parents are reported as still living!

Thank you!  I don't know about running more like staggering.  I am beginning to like SP is good!  I am in the common room as well and will put the link here as people have been busy deciphering  names and places for me.

Do you or does anyone know of a place called Hanlus in Aberdeenshire?  This is where James Ferguson was born circa 1874.  Google don't recognise it.

As I mentioned in the other post, I think 'Hanlus' is a mistranscription on the index I am looking at for the 1901 census. From the possible birth we have for Joseph's father, James Ferguson, his birth place showed on IGI as 1874 Methlick - I know, nothing like 'Hanlus'! You should check the original image for the 1901 census on SP for accuracy. Transcriptions are great until they are mis- transcribed

I see from the other post, that you have now looked at the 1901 census and still question marks over place of birth for James Ferguson. I thought I would add the section here from his birth cert in 1874 hoping that someone with more local knowledge of Methlick name places may recognise it
