A GUMMOW problem.
« on: Saturday 24 January 09 14:56 GMT (UK) »
I have abit of a mystery which I hope somebody could solve, or how to find the answer.

Elizabeth Bishop born 1823 (c) Eloshayle, Wadebridge, married Richard Gill born 1814 (c), they married in 1845 (have marriage certificate)

On the IGI (including batch noes) Elizabeth's parents appear to be called Mark Bishop and Joanna Broad, on the marriage certificate Elizabeth's father was down as John G.....? diiicult to read the entry, my first thought was he could be her step father.

To add to this I,ve had a contact from Genes who has sent me his tree with Elizabeth and Richard.  But parents are called Charles Bishop and Jonnah Gilbert, I have replied to him with this problem and have had no reply.

Another thing did notice there were one or two surnames attached to the Bishop family with the surname of Gummuw.  Was wandering if John G..... was John Gummuw.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Helena,

I don't know what to think here. If I am looking at the correct 1841 entry for Egloshayle, I note a Robert WORDEN (a mason) is head of the house. Then we have Joanna BISHOP 50 Pauper, Elizabeth BISHOP 15 pauper and Susannah BISHOP 12 and John BISHOP 9

Now looking at Egloshayle we have

Susanna BISHOP was baptised parents 31 Dec 1826 parents Charles and Joanna (so fits nicely with the census entry)

Now Charles and Joanna also appear to have had

John 1 Jan 1815 buried 4 May 1823 aged 7 years
Joanna 18 Aug 1816
Jane 10 Jan 1830

Charles BISHOP = Joanna GILBERT 27 Dec 1813 St Breock

John BISHOP was baptised 22 Apr 1832 Mother Joanna (also fits nicely with the census entry)

Now a Joanna alone had

Richard Gummow BISHOP 24 Feb 1840 (They are in Egloshayle in 1841 Joanna 25 so this does not appear to be the same Joanna - she appears to be the daughter of Charles and Joanna. It looks like this childs father was possibly a Gummow)

Then we have Mark and Joanna who had

Mary 28 Jan 1816
Elizabeth 14 Dec 1823

There is a Mark Bishop buried in St Issey 6 Apr 1837 aged 42 years

Mark BISHOP = Johanna BROAD 29 Apr 1815 Egloshayle

This same couple appear to have had several children in St Issey as well

This Joanna is in St Issey in 1841 also aged 50 with her two youngest children.

Regardless no sign of an Elizabeth with a father John. Is it possible for you to crop the certificate and post the section with the fathers information for us to take a look at? We do not allow whole certificates to be posted due to copyright so you would need to crop it.

Cheers Kris  :)

Hi Helina,

As I said on your other thread you will not be able to attach the image there as that is on the Lookup Requests Board. You should have no problem here. There should be an option when you reply on this thread to attach a photograph or image. Just click on that -  Browse your harddrive to find the image and post. If it wont work, it should give you a reason for it not working - What does it say? - The problems are generally wrong file type, or the image is too large so you will need resize it or the name you are using has been used elsewhere so you will need to rename it to attach, (I find just adding some numbers usually works.)

Please see

Hope it works

Kris  :)

Hi Helina,

Ill merge this together now that you have posted the image.

Well now, that is peculiar isn't it. Was she single at marriage? Its not Gummow - This looks like John GROWDEN to me.  I note there were John Growdens born in Cornwall but nothing to match showing in the census  :-\
