Highmoor Kinson?
« on: Friday 11 February 05 14:58 GMT (UK) »
Can anyone tell me if there is or was such a place as Highmoor in Kinson possibly near Poole, Canford in Dorset?

What was it in 1871 please?

Thanks for any help

I live quite near to Kinson, and personally I've never heard of Highmoor. But, there is a Highmoor Road in Wallisdown, which is really near heathland. It is now called Turbury Park

I would imagine that this hasn't changed much over the years, and there are some old buildings in the area.

I will look into this for you, and will let you know what I find out.

Theresa,

Over the weekend, I have been trying to find Highmoor for you, but unfortunately have not had a lot of luck.

I have looked through local history books, but nothing is mentioned.

Where did you get the name Highmoor from? was it from a census or something?

The only references I did find was when I did a search on google and it came up with a Highmoor farm, which is in Talbot Village, which is in the same area, and when I searched on the Trade Directories it came up with:

Kellys Directory, Dorsetshire, 1889

Henry Collins, Farmer, Highmoor

and

Mrs Julia Crocker, Post Office, Highmoor

You can see this directory on http://www.historicaldirectories.org/hd/d.asp

I will try and get to the local library over the next few days and see if I can find anymore old books there.

I will also send you a PM about this.

Rebecca

Hi Theresa,

I have been looking on some old maps this morning, and am pretty sure I've found an area called Highmoor on an 1889-1890 map of the area.

The reason that I could not find it before is because this area has now been built upon and has been merged into Wallisdown, on the map is the Kings Arms public house, and I'm pleased to say that this is still there!!

I found this map on http://www.old-maps.co.uk/

Hope this helps! If you would like me to email you this map, please PM me.

Rebecca

Hi
There is another Highmoor listed:
If you go to:  http://www.communigate.co.uk/dorset/kinsondorset/page4.phtml
You will see the first map shows a High or Hugh Moor just South of Wimborne Road. I would place this area around the present day Dudells Avenue?
May be of help.

We too have been looking for Highmoor (In particular 2 Highmoor Cottages listed in High road).

We found the area to extend around the King's Arms pub, Wallisdown.

We've found a local book that was of use to us. It was "Talbot Village- a unique village in Dorset 1880-1989" by Mildred Gillett IBSN 0906287774-022

Hope this of use to you
