Widdowson's of Barlow
« on: Sunday 01 February 09 01:14 GMT (UK) »
Is anyone researching this family?

There seemed to be quite a lot of them and I am at a standstill with Thomas - on 1861 shown as a blacksmith born Chesterfield and wife Martha born Barlow living in Sheffield

In 1851 the family are in Great Barlow, except now the 'head'
is shown as Godfrey.

Godfrey, age 12, shows up in 1841 in Chesterfield.

Have I got the right thread anywhere???

Do hope someone can put me straight here.

Kind regards,
Dot.

I suspect that's a mistake on the census  :-\

IGI has a baptism for Godfrey Widdowson 7 Oct 1828 Chesterfield, Derbyshire parents John and Ann - the family you found in 1841

marriage reg: Jun 1849 Sheffield 22 520  Martha TURNER & Godfrey WIDEHOUSON

The marriage cert may show if he was Godfrey Thomas and maybe used both names

1841 census  HO107/196/6  Folio 11 Page 16
Crowhole, Great Barlow, Staveley, Derbyshire
Joseph Turner     30  Blacksmith
Martha Turner    20
George Turner    1
all born Derbyshire

possible marriage  Mar 1838  Macclesfield    19   105
Brocklehurst    Martha    Joseph Turner

Thanks Ecneps for those details. I shall have to send for that marriage certificate between Godfrey and Martha.

Referring back to 1861, the daughter Martha, who is the one I am interested in, is shown as 11 years old and a scholar.

As I said, she was still in Sheffield in 1871 and a Martha Widdowson married Thomas Wills in 1873.  I have this certificate and on it Martha names her father as Thomas, a blacksmith.

That is interesting that Martha snr remarried and was in Sheffield also in 1871 still in Brightside Beirlow.

Anyway, I have a bit more to go on now, so thanks once again for your help.

Omskirk - I shall be looking into that link later on tonight.
Thanks for that.

Regards,
Dot.

Hi, I picked up your post on Godfrey Widdowson, in Barlow and wondered if you found any further details, particularly confusion on whether he was interchanging names between Godfrey and Thomas.

I am researching my family on my mothers side and have reached Samuel Widdowson, lived in Thirsk in the mid to late 1800's before moving with family to my area, Baildon, Guiseley. He was a fell monger. he listed his birthplace as Barlow, Derbyshire and I have seen other research in my family state his father was Godfrey Widdowson. , and mother Martha., - there is also detailed Godfrey's father as Godfrey Wiedehousen, where I think our paths cross? Before I go ahead I want to confirm the link to Godfrey. Interestingly one of Samuel Widdowson's sons ( he had a lot of children!) was called Samuel Turner Widdowson, my great grandfather.

Regards

Graham Wood

Hi, Graham,
Welcome to RootsChat, I see that was your first post.  This is a terrific site and I hope you have as much success with your research as I have had over the years.
Now, those dratted Widdowsons!  I have the file out in front of me but it will take me a while to refresh my memory of who's who.  I will definitely get back to you once it has all become somewhat clearer.  Godfrey/Thomas annoyed me so much I have not done anything in this branch of the family for over 3 years.  Widdowson is my husband's lot.  He is a Dawson, the family originally came from Lincs and moved to Sheffield in the early 1900s.
Anyway, I'll be in touch in the next few days,
Regards
Dot.
