Birth Certificate terminology
« on: Sunday 01 February 09 01:25 GMT (UK) »
Hello,

I have two English Birth Certificates that list the mother's name as Annie Jackson, formerly Tinsley.  Am I to assume that Tinsley is her maiden name, or does the word "formerly" have a significance  - that is to say that she may have been married before to a Tinsley, but that Tinsley is not her maiden name.  Hope this is clear.  If her maiden name were Tinsley, would it say "born Tinsley" or something like that?  There is no clearly defined field for "maiden name". Appreciate advice from someone more experienced.

Tinsley would be her maiden name

if she had been married before there should be 3 names - although they weren't always revealed!!!
