St Mary's Illingworth is the Church of England- the traditional church- that has Ovenden within its parish and has many Ovenden people  in its records.
There are also a number of nonconformist cahepls near there- non conformity was thriving in Yorkshire in 18th & 19th C.

There is a website run I think by Hugh someone? that lists IGI Batch numbers...and if you serach for Ovenden of that site Ovenden you'll see all the churches for which  IGI have copied the records, and you can search them free online.
.  A google search for " IGI Batch Numbers" should being the web site up

Colin,
when you do the search also look at surrounding areas - Northowram, Illingworth, Wheatley, Denholme, Queenshead, Clayton-cum-Bradford, Shelf, to name a few. All had non-conformist chapels and were easily accessible from Ovenden.
There is a site at
www.bmdregisters.co.uk/
that can be searched for free and gives non-parochial registrations - baptisms, births and deaths.
I got lucky on a similar issue when surfing the Yorkshire Archive records at Halifax library - Lady from Ovenden involved  :o
good hunting

Hi Charlotte and Dave,

Thanks for the links and suggestions. It looks as though the nonconformists is my best bet and the list of nearby places will be very helpful because I'm not familiar with the area.

I appreciate your help.
Thanks very much,
Colin

Colin, Keep us posted how you get on...
I found it surprising how many non-conf. records there are... and remeber most of the marriages took place only in certain designated churches- my Ovenden Hargreaves married in St John's Halifax... so you'd need to check St John's...

Thanks Charlotte.

I've always thought it strange that in a male oriented world, marriages were traditionally conducted in the bride's parish and not the groom's. I wonder if it is symbolic of a knight in shining armour sweeping the fair maiden off her feet and carrying her off. It's funny how the mind works when there's nothing better to do!!

I've been checking for local churches and found there was a Wesleyan Methodist in Nursery Lane, Ovenden, where records start in 1826 so it might be a good place to look.

I'll certainly keep you posted.

Regards,
Colin
