Maria Marrow 1834 or Maria O Marrow
« on: Tuesday 03 February 09 19:21 GMT (UK) »
Hi I am looking for the parents or siblings of Maria Marrow. She was born 24 Dec 1834 in Killjourdan, IRELAND or Kilgadorn, IRELAND (which I believe neither exist). She died 09 Feb 1912 in Council Bluffs, Pottawattamie, IA. She married William Benjamin Short (s) on 19 Aug 1850 New York. I am not exactly sure when she immigrated to the U.S. I'm thinking she came to Canada where she later met William and married. It had to be between 1832-1850.

I have come across her name spelled Maria O Marrow also.

Her and William were one of the first 50 families to help build Blue Rapids Kansas in the 1869-1870's.

I am intersted in finding her family in Ireland and any thoughts or any direction would be greatly appreciated. Or any ideas on maybe the area of Ireland she was born in is maybe mispelled or something I over looked.

Thank,

Margie

Welcome to Rootschat but to find where she came from in Ireland you will need to search in U.S. records (and possibly Canada) to see if there are any clues to her Irish origins.
Are you sure about her surname? my first impression is that it could be Marra or O'Marra, O'Meara, etc.
The prefix 'Kil' in the placename in Ireland means church so there are hundreds of townlands in Ireland that start with Kil.
Does her death certificate list any parents' names? have you traced here in each possibly census record to see if a more exact place of birth besides 'Ireland' is given? what about a newspaper obituary for her (and husband) or local history?- the home place of settlers were often recorded.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

My 4th-great-grandmother's maiden name is spelled Harrow on transcript of her 1807 marriage record, but Marrow on her youngest son's 1911 death certificate.  She married Samuel Hart in St. Columb's Parish in Londonderry, and they lived in Magherashanvalley, Donaghmore Parish, Donegal, before sailing to New York on a brig named Ontario in 1834.  The marriage transcript gives no details of either's parents, hometown, or age, and both Samuel and Charlotte disappear after the 1855 New York State Census.  The following year, three of their seven sons moved to Michigan, and the entire family began to spread out.  I have found no death or burial records for either Samuel or Charlotte.  It's possible that one or both made the journey to Michigan, but it's not very likely.  My 3rd-great-grandfather, James Hart, married Jane Kirk in 1841, the daughter of William Kirk and Anne Morrow of Mullinboys, Inver Parish, Donegal.

EDIT:  Both Samuel Hart and Charlotte Marrow were born about 1790.

I wonder if that place name could be Killorglin?
