Who lived in my house in 1871?
« on: Tuesday 03 February 09 23:30 GMT (UK) »
Can anyone tell me how to find who lived in my house in about 1871?
I have gone back to 1881 with help of the census but don't know who might have lived there in 1871.
Thanks

Hello Vilma, when I used to subscribe to A------Y .co there was a site which needed an extra subscription  to search but it did have Streets and house numbers and who lived there .I can`t remember if it only applied to census years which would seem most likely wouldn`t it. It was tantalising because I`d type in my address and up it would come but then a subscription was requiredto go further,I can`t think of any other way. Viktoria

Vilma  -  there's a place search facility on findmypast.

If you don't have a sub there, you can use pay per view credits -  or put the address up here and someone can look for you   :D
Census information is Crown Copyright from TNA.
Titchfield, Hampshire: Reed,  Fielder, Cawte, Goddard.
Kent:  Float,  Cutbush.
Wallasey, Cheshire: Carroll, Ledsham.
Liverpool : Horsfall, Prescott

P.S Vilma, There is another way which worked for me. My G-parents did not come up on a census but I knew where they lived because of a death cert. So I took note of their neighbours  in a previous census and searched for these people instead and sure enough my Gps were still living in the same street.Their name was so badly written it was almost illegible but it was them from ages, occupations etc. There is a chance somebody who appears in 1871 was also there in 1861 then you can see who was at your house by address.    best of luck V

My sub to The Genealogist site includes an address search feature.  If you PM me with your address (including town and county in 1871) then I will happily look it up for you.

Nick.

Thanks to all who sent me helpful tips. I did as Mum44 suggested and found that in 1871 there were only 8 houses on that street, so my house must have been built between the 1871 and 1881 census.
Thanks again to you all.

Hi

Using censuses to trace the history and excat locations of buildings that your ancestors lived in either at the census or before or after a certain census can be very helpful.
