Is this Strange
« on: Wednesday 04 February 09 14:45 GMT (UK) »
This seems a bit strange...

I am looking for the father of George Chester (born 1828 Leicester) I am thinking i should order his marriage certificate. However the search on freebmd.org.uk  returned 2 results both for "George Chester" married to "Mary Smart" but strangely  one was "Barrow on S" September 1851 and the other one was "Barrow S" dated Dec 1851. I understand that Barrow S is an alternative for Barrow on S but why different dates?  the 2 references are [15 41] and [15 63].  Which one do I order and is there anything the GRO site can do to help?

Cheers for any advice

Have had a look - see what you mean. the GRO would probably accepy your ref if you put the full names; 1851 plus vol 15.

HOWEVER . if you can wait until friday/ sat  i am going to Loughborough library where they have the records and i could look it up first for you.

just remembered that the leics Villages site has B on S records available:

http://www.leicestershirevillages.com/barrowuponsoar/availablechurchandbu.html

can't find them????
will still check in library but you will find this site very useful.

have just been to the library and cannot find the marriage in question. got the right records but it is not there - just like the B on S. records on Villages site.

What i will do before you go down the GRO route is to ask 'Mike of Leicester' on the Leics board to look this up for you as he goes regularly to the records office in leicester / has records available.

will send him a PM nad ask him to look. bear with me.....

Greeting’s Again…… Diddymiller.& Welcome Bigclick.

Ummm bit of a mystery…….. :-\

Free BMD. Has only the September Marriage Recorded. ….( Both Names )
But the G .R. O has both events  ??........under both names ……
I just wonder if that there may have been a hiccup and the Sept one was canceled And took place in December Qrt. ?

OR……
That the Banns being read in two Parishes. …… Seagrave & Sileby.
One was late in being recorded ? …
hence two documentations of the same event.
( which I have seen before )

Also remember that the Location we see for the Certificates….
although it states Barrow S.
This is for THE WHOLE OF THE DISTRICT.
( 43 Parishes make up this District including the Village of Barrow Upon Soar.Sileby & Seagrave )

BUT. …..I would try the Parish Marriages for SILEBY.
Going on the following Parish Registers :~

SILEBY BAPTISMS :~

1856.
Catherine. Daughter of George & Mary Chester.
Bapt. ….3rd. February.
St: Mary’s Parish Church.

1858.
Florence Maude Elizabeth. Daughter of George & Mary Chester.
Bapt. ….27th. June.
St: Mary’s Parish Church.

Both state that the Father ( George ) is a Publican.

Which Matches the 1861.Census returns for :~
RG.9. / 2279. / 24. / Page. 7. Keyword....... Chester.
Within the Village of Barrow – Upon – Soar.
But it states that George was born in Seagrave…….?

The closest Baptism of a Chester in Leicester c 1828.:~

Fiche No'. 24D65. / B3.:~

22nd. October 1823.
St:Margaret’s Parish.
Samuel John. Son of Samuel & Mary Chester.

I see that also there is a Samuel Chester age 1 on that Census returns 1861.
were they following Family naming traditions ?

MIKE.

Researching :-

Isle of Wight.          Oxfordshire / Warwickshire.

Cassell.                   Powers.
Draper.                   Hirons.
Combs.                   Botts.
Stallard.                 Hall.
