Newcastle Calvary, Artillary & Infantry 1841 Census
« on: Wednesday 04 February 09 20:51 GMT (UK) »
Hi

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Just found my GGGgrandfather on the 1841 census at a military barracks in Newcastle upon Tyne. The regiment is listed as the Newcastle Calvary, Artillary & Infantry. Anyone have information on this regiment?

For info his son was a Sergeant in the 17th Regiment of Foot which was amalgamated into what is now the Royal Anglian.

Tried Google and found zip of any use.

Thanks

Any chance you can show us the original census entry?
The thing is there is no such regiment as the Newcastle Cavalry, Artillery & Infantry.  ???
It might simply mean it's an army depot (ie for cavalry, artillery and infantry in a general sense) in Newcastle.

Can you see any officers listed?
Name interests: Boulton, Murrell, Lock, Croxton, Skinner, Blewett, Tonkin, Trathen.

Yes, I have attached 2 jpeg docs.

No 1 showing the details of Michael James Dodd
No 2, page 1 showing the details of the Major in charge -  Henry Arthur Maqenis

Hope this helps?

Lt Col Henry Arthur Magenis (note the spelling) transferred from the 87th Foot to the 27th Foot in March 1848 - http://www.london-gazette.co.uk/issues/20959/pages/960

With the 87th Foot in April 1845 - http://www.london-gazette.co.uk/issues/20463/pages/1185

And was with the 87th Foot in 1831 - http://www.london-gazette.co.uk/issues/18779/pages/363

So he was with the 87th Regiment in 1841
