William Paine c1717 & Mary Fuggle c1720
« on: Saturday 07 February 09 15:58 GMT (UK) »
Been trying to find out more about these two for a while now, especially Mary who I can't seem to connect in to any of the Fuggle families in the area. Both possibly born in Kenardington, married St.Mary's Kenardington 2/3/1746. Paine is sometimes spelt Pain. I know William was baptised in Kenardington 16/2/1717 but not sure if he was born there. Later he was a yeoman. William's parent's were possibly Thomas Paine (b.Kingsnorth?) and Grace Hernedon (B.Kingsnorth?).

William PAINE & Mary FUGGLE were married by licence.  If you can find a copy of the licence you might find out more details, eg. names of fathers, whether a minor etc.

Thanks for your help. Do I need to contact the church they married in for this?

Some later marriage licences have been indexed.  I'm not sure about the earlier ones.  Try contacting the Centre for Kentish Studies.  They should be able to tell if they have survived and where they are kept.

You can find their email address on the website

Many thanks for the help, will try that. I do have a copy of the Banns but there is no mention of parents names on those.

They were either married by licence or banns.    ???

If you have a copy of the banns perhaps they weren't married by licence after all.

Ok, I was not sure because I thought the banns had to be read before the marriage.

People married by licence for many reasons_
It was quicker if you needed to 'marry in a hurry' - perhaps the bride was pregnant.
They didn't want other people to know their business (Banns did not have to be read).
As a sign of wealth - it was more expensive to marry by licence.
The bride and groom did not reside in the parish in which they were to be married.

If you can find a marriage licence it will give the following information:-
names of bride & groom
place of residence
occupation
whether single or widowed
whether a minor and if so name of father or guardian
where the marriage was to take place
