Batton Gordon Massey families 1870 Saintfield area
« on: Sunday 08 February 09 17:30 GMT (UK) »
I believe that my ancestor George Batton lived in Tonaghmore. He shows in Griffiths Valuation in 1863/4
George Batton was married to Eliza Massey and their daughter Ellen married James Gordon at 1st Presbyterian Church in Saintfield on 6th July 1867.  Shows that Ellen lived in Drumnaconnell and James lived in Tullychien? James was the son of James Gordon and Ellen was the daughter of George Batton, Stone Mason.
Witness is showing as Eliza Ferris and Robert Massey.

Can any tell me anything about the Batton family. George and Eliza had the following children :
Ellen born ca 1848, Samuel, John, Andrew, George and Robert.
We know that John was born on 10th June 1852 in Belfast as we found his US passport application complete with photograph in 1920.

George Batton died in Galston, Ayrshire on 30th September 1872. We think that he returned or went to Galston after the death of Eliza Massey. We can find no marriage record for George and Eliza so perhaps they never married.

Ellen and James Gordon's children were born in Ireland until 1873. After the birth of N.John Gordon in 1873 the next son was born in Galston in 1876.

I am trying to find out more about Eliza Massey and George Batton. I can only assume the link with Co. Down from Ellen marrying in Saintfield and George Batton showing in Tonaghmore in 1863/4.

Would appreciate any advice on trying to find out more.
I have tried various emerald ancestors/ancestry ireland websites to no avail....

Regards
Sandra

Thanks for the links to the websites. I recently started using the pilotfamilysearch website and it has proved invaluable for tracing other Batton family members who moved to New York in the 1850's.

After posting I went onto the Griffiths Valuation website and was able to view the transcript page for Tonaghmore in 1863 and found George Batton, Alexander Massey and Robert Massey were all tenants of Tonaghmore at the same time. So this proves the Massey link.... All of the Batton death certificates list that their mother was Elizabeth Massey and father was George Batton.

We also know that all of the Batton children were born in Ireland.  we only have the date of birth for one of the sons - John Batton - on his US passport application in 1920 he lists his date of birth as 10th June 1852 in Belfast Ireland.
Do you know if it is possible to get a copy of the birth certificate or did they not need to register the birth of any of their children.
Surely 6 children must have been recorded somewhere, in a Church parish register? I know they were all presbyterian Church...

thanks for the information on George Batton, Cornwall. Will stat checking this out.

Civil registration of births began in Ireland in 1864. For earlier dates you need to search for church records (if they exist). To do so you not only need to know their religion but where they lived (parish if not actual townland or if in a city, like Belfast, the street or area).

From what's been posted it looks as though only the son John went to U.S. and his 1852 birthdate has already been found in passport application.

Thanks for the list of Batton/Batten family members departing Ireland.
Although the Batton family were born in Ireland we have evidence that they moved to Scotland.
So the sailing port for them would have been Glasgow.
I have managed to trace Samuel Batton and wife Isabella leaving Scotland.
Also managed to trace Jessie Batton, Robert Batton and 2 batton children. We know that Jessie's husband John departed earlier than the family.

Another John Batton, son of Andrew Batton also went to USA in 1890's,

I will look for their entries on Ellis / Castle Garden site.

Thanks for your help.

Tonaghmore - Massey family.

I found entry for Alexander Massey who was living as a neighbour to George Batton during the Valuation 1862....in Tonaghmore, Saintfield.
We believe Alexander Massey died in late 1872. He had a son Robert daughter Eliza/Elizabeth.
We are trying to find out anything about birth or death of Elizabeth.
Her last child born circa 1866 named Robert and George (her husband/partner) died in Scotland in September 1872. So this would probably be the date range where she died. We think that George went to Scotland with his children after Eliza died? Seems a reasonable conclusion.

Does anyone know how I would find out if there are remaining ancestors in/around Saintfield from this Massey family. It was not an uncommon name in the area......
