COHEN sisters Evas, Kate, Maud, Ella St Pancras 1860s
« on: Sunday 08 February 09 18:04 GMT (UK) »
Eva Eliza, Kate Louise [born Meerut, India in 1865 & 1867 respectively] and Maud Mary & Ella [born St Pancras 1869 & 1871 respectively] COHEN were daughters of Lionel Andrew COHEN & Eliza HAWKINS who married in Bengal in 1864. Lionel died in 1885.

I know that the youngest sister Ella married Charles Joseph BAKER in 1896. In 1897 they had twin sons Lionel Charles Edgar & Victor Harold Edwin followed by Leslie Albert Joseph in 1901. Lionel & Victor served in WW1, Lionel winning the MC but dying on 1 Oct 1918.

I would be very interested in any information about the marriages, spouses and descendants of Eva, Kate & Maud.

TIA, Josey

The Times, Tuesday, Apr 18, 1922; pg. 1; Issue 43008; col A
DEATHS
On the 15th April, at the house of her son-in-law, 41, Stanthorpe-road, Streatham, SW, Eliza, the widow of Lionel Andrew Cohen. Australian papers, please copy.

In 1911 an Eliza Cohen is living in Wandsworth in the household of Milford Douglas, Maud Mary, and Douglas Arthur Lionel Dale.

I'm not having any luck finding the family in 1881 or 1891.
Do you know if there were relatives in Australia who the older girls might have gone to stay with?

Thank you very much Valda & Jorose.

I will look for the will. As far as I know there was no Australain connection but will definitely look into it.

Thanks again, Josey

I found a marriage on ancestry BMD for a Katie Louise Cohen 1894 Q3 St Pancras 1 b 21 to Walter Augustus Edwards or Ernest Edwin Smith [other woman is Ada Maud Tracey]. No luck finding her as either Kate or Katie Edward or Smith on the 1901 yet.

No wonder I couldn't find Maud in 1901 - ancestry has the family indexed as DOLL with Milford as Wilford!! It's a pity ancestry doesn't have a system of reporting errors, as findmypast does.

As with jorose, I cannot find any of the family in 1881 or 1891.

I'm sure we will get there in the end. What is the link for The Times, jorose?

Thanks again, Josey

There is a version of the archive here:
http://archive.timesonline.co.uk/tol/archive/

But first check with your local library (which is how I have access).

Thanks for the link & the tip - I see it is a subscription service but I will check the local library.

I have sent off a search for a will for Eliza which could prove very useful especially if it clarifies an Australian connection.

Lionel Andrew Cohen & Eliza Hawkins married in Bengal in 1864; according to the 1871 census she was born in Limehouse & he in London. I have yet to determine Eliza's parents. Is there any resource I can consult to see when either of them travelled to India?

The two best sources online for Indian records are:
http://search.fibis.org/frontis/bin/index.php
and
http://indiafamily.bl.uk/UI/

You should be able to get a copy of their marriage (try contacting the GRO and asking about overseas records) which might give some information on her family.

From the 1911 census, Walter Augustus Edwards appears in St. Pancras with Ada Maud.
So Ernest Edwin Smith must have married Kate/Katie? Perhaps they are the ones who headed to Australia.
