I didn't get a chance to dig last night...I'll try this nocte....
One more charge and then be dumb,
When the forts of Folly fall,
May the victors when they come
Find my body near the wall.

Now back from the land of the Zulu!

He is either in the Dragoons or the Dragoon Guards.  If he's Dragoon Guards he can only be from the 1st King's Dragoon Guards, if a Dragoon then 1st Royal Dragoons fits the bill.

Isandlwana
...Neither praise nor blame add to their epitaph but like it be simple as that which marked Thermopylae.
Tell it in England those that pass us by, here, faithful to their charge, her soldiers lie.

Bit late to this thread but have an interest. My name is James William Putland. My dad recently passed. I know his parents were both army. He had a tea pot from an earlier relative. I have attached a photo of the inscription which is for a Staff Sergeant James William Putland. Inscription is dated Sep 1853 and was presented to him by the Officers NCOs and men on leaving the depot troop, 11th PAO Hussars, Canterbury. Not sure if he rejoined but aware we had a relative KIA at the battle of Balaclava.
