Skinners Horse, The Bengal Lancers!

Well the be-turbaned chaps are!

I have a closer look a the the others...
One more charge and then be dumb,
When the forts of Folly fall,
May the victors when they come
Find my body near the wall.

Although the two be turbaned Indian officers have what REALLY appears to be the pugree of the Bengal Lancers...Well in B&W it does... The puttees are wound Infantry style though...Hmmm

The x2 sepoys are very hard to make out any Regt.

The chap in the centre looks very much like a District Commissioner...He has a court sword rather than a military one. The hat is a Wolseley, commonly known as a pith helmet...There is an Indian version called a Cawnpore which is flatter.

Thanks for the link, just been there and found my GGGgrandfather on the Indian Mutiny rolls for 1857-1859, but no mention of Sergeant Cox (of the photo)

I have just got goose bumps from your id.

If the gentleman in white is my Ggrandfather, he was a Sergeant in the Rifle Brigade up to 1898 (Master Cook). We know the Rifles went to serve in South Africa during the 1900's. However we have no family oral history of South Africa but we do have some chinese ivory statues and puzzleballs dating from this period. On Googling the Bengal Lancers I note that they were at the Boxer Revolution. So maybe he was transferred to serve with them?

Any idea where I might go next to follow this link?

I'm not totally certain on the Skinners Horse ID!! Its just the pugree is the same pattern.

Are you sure that the centre chap is a Sgt??? He looks more Civil Service to me... :o There is a bit of a white out on the uniform, but I can see nil rank... ???

I suppose he could have retired and taken a civi post out there before returning home?

We know almost nothing about his side of the family. He died in 1913 in Shrewsbury and wasn't spoken about by either his wife or daughter.

If he was a district commissioner, any pointers as to where to look next?
