1841 census look up please - John Newton
« on: Monday 09 February 09 22:53 GMT (UK) »
Could someone please look up John Newton on the 1841 census. From a previous look-up, I know that John Newton was 75 years old, a FWK and living with Sarah who was 60. Does the record contain any other details - for example their relationship to each other (husband and wife??) - where John was born etc. Many thanks.

Greeting’s & Welcome Tim P.

Sorry unfortunately early Censuses were basic
They did NOT give relationship to head of Household ..
e.g. Wife, Son or Daughter.

Plus on some returns anyone over the age of 15
Their years were rounded DOWN to the nearest multiple of 5.
e.g. = 20 could mean between 20 to 25.in real terms

Likewise regarding place of birth it only states either : ~

Y. = Yes born within the County of the Census.
N. = Not born within the County of the Census.

And the further we go back in time. ......
The worst it gets !!!!!

1811. Head count Loughborough. ( fore runner to the Census )

Newton John. .... Frame Work Knitter.
Males = 4
Females = 3.

Within the Household.

And that’s it………

Draper.                   Hirons.
Combs.                   Botts.
Stallard.                 Hall.

I can only see 2 John Newtons of the right age range in Leicestershire in the 1841 census, and neither of those appears to have a 60year old called Sarah living with them.
Bradbury (Sedgeley, Bilston, Warrington)
Cooper (Sedgeley, Bilston)
Kilner/Kilmer (Leic, Notts)
Greenfield (Liverpool)
Holyland (Anywhere and everywhere, also Holiland Holliland Hollyland)
Pryce/Price (Welshpool, Liverpool)
Rawson (Leicester)
Upton (Desford, Leics)
Partrick (Vera and George, Leicester)
Marshall (Westmorland, Cheshire/Leicester)
