Need Help Finding the newspaper this article came from...
« on: Thursday 12 February 09 01:01 GMT (UK) »
I have a photocopy of this newspaper article about my g-grandfather and his brothers enlisting in the Marine Corps. David Otto Creighton and his brothers Thomas Percy and Charles Homer.

Here's the scan of the photocopy, on my family site:
http://is.gd/jewA

Unfortunately, the newspaper banner is chopped off the original, and I don't know what paper this is to use for the source. The brothers would have enlisted in Los Angeles, CA, so I'm fairly sure that this is an LA area paper. However, they also grew up in, and had family in Texas, so it possibly could also be a Texas paper (likely McLennan or Taylor counties).

Also tried searching for the tagline "The Paper That Goes Home." but that seems to be a fairly common phrase for the time.

They enlisted on 29 Jun 1917, and the date on the paper appears to be 7 July 1917.

I've tried searching for the article text on the various newspaper archive sites, but don't have access to all of them and the ones I do have access to couldn't find it.

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

I see from the text of the article that the two older brothers were working in Covina, and that the youngest , who was living in Texas, asked them to wait for him to join them  before they enlisted, so I suspect the article  was in a local newspaper in California not in Texas. (The word "here" is used twice in the article).

Have you tried googling the photographers name to see if there's info about where he worked?

Also just had an afterthought, do you think this post might get more responses if it was on the USA board?

Thanks for the replies. I would have responded sooner but apparently I didn't set the email me on reply setting correctly or otherwise didn't get the email notification.

Yes, I did strongly suspect the paper was a local CA paper, than a Texas one, based on similar clues.

And good job on finding more clues on the photographer, Lesanne. I did do a search on him, but apparently I didn't look quite hard enough. Thanks.

Maybe I could post a note pointing to this post in the USA board? I figured that this category seemed general enough and fitted what I was looking for more, though.

That's an excellent idea. I found their pre-1985 archives search that covers the time period I'm looking for ( http://pqasb.pqarchiver.com/latimes/advancedsearch.html ) and tried to find the article myself, but it's either missing from their online archives, or they weren't the ones who published it in the first place. I'm not sure I want to pay them $40 for a hand search to find out that they didn't actually publish the article.

I'm quite sure I did an exhaustive search, searching by keywords, and headline text, and also limiting by date.

I wonder, could the article have been published by a smaller, local area, newspaper publisher, utilizing the Times photographer on a freelance or contract basis?

I also came across another general newspaper archive site and didn't come across anything there either.

All I can think of, is to make contact with someone there first.
Email them the article, to see if they recognise the type settings, page layout etc.

They might sell the olde back numbers, if you're lucky.....  8)

Hi - I searched for Covina newspapers 1917 and found the public library has digitized many of them. - http://covina.newspaperarchive.com -

Do you have the 1919 article I found by searching Creighton and Marines that tells of the return to Covina of David Otto?

This does not answer your question, except that the front page of the Covina Argus in 1919 does not look like the front page you presented for 1917.
