For general information:

Almost all forum, bulletin board and chatroom software converts certain combinations of text characters into graphic smileys.  Usually they use combinations that don't generally appear in printed  texts and nobody notices.

But sometimes you do notice  :o
The most common "how did that get there ?" occurrence is the three question marks, the cause of this topic.

... and the second most common occurrence (also the cause of a RootsChat topic) is this one:

If you write a numbered list of things, you will be OK if you have seven or less items in your list.
1) Item 1
2) Item 2
:
to
:
7) Item 7
..... so far, so good - no problems, but when you then type 8 and ) you get
8) Item 8   :o

If it is trivial, then just type 8, then a space, and then the bracket:
8 ) Item 8  :)

Or....
Quote
But, as I said, it hasn't always been trivial.
Should you ever be in this position, then click on the link supplied by Arranroots, and scroll down the page a bit.

You will see that there is an option [ x ] Don't use smileys
This applies only to individual replies; it is not a global option for all messages.

Hope this helps,
Bob

Hi Erato,

Smileys/emoticons are, of course, far from always about "smiling".

Even the RootsChat smileys include angry, sad, crying etc.

Other smileys available on the Web cover a vast range of smileys which are definitely not "smiling".

For example  <a href="http://www.freesmileys.org" title="Free Smiley Face courtesy of www.FreeSmileys.org"><img src="http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys/smiley-angry016.gif" alt="Free Smiley Face Courtesy of www.FreeSmileys.org" border="0" /></a>

However, here's another way to avoid the "Huh" smiley which, on RC, results from 3 question marks.

Don't leave a space before the 3 question marks and see what happens.

Thus ...

Can one avoid the "Huh" smiley by not leaving a space???

Yes, so it seems!

JAP

I think Jap's red smiley is definitely one for a frustrated genealogist!

Thanks, JAP, but I think I'll pass.  I just don't like the things.  I will try to avoid having them pop up in my posts and if I slip up, I'll edit them out if I think that they convey something I didn't mean

Hi again Erato,

The first part of my post related to:
Quote from: Arranroots
I'm sorry to hear that you don't feel like smiling! ...
I just mentioned in passsing that emoticons are far from always about "smiling".

The second part of my post was the important part and was the reason why I posted at all.
Namely to let you (and others who don't like the 'Huh' emoticon) know that we can avoid it by not inserting a space in front of three question marks.

Cheers,

JAP
