An amazing photo supposedly located in Portobello Road. I find it hard to believe this is the same arcade leading to the actual school, St. Marks. The last time I saw it, the entrance, a few years back,1986, it was all locked up with heavy chains. What happened to the school beyond the arcade?

A slight correction about the date the last time I was in England, 2086, not 1986. Big difference. Cheers!

So sorry, I am laughing at the date 2086 that I posted. It should have been 2006, of course.
Always had a math problem, so excuse me please.

Cheers to you all!

I was wondering if you were the new time-travelling Doctor Who!  :)

Thanks for giving me a good giggle this cold, damp morning here in the mid west of the US RD.
Actually, I am a big fan of Doctor Who.

Merry Christmas!

I was a pupil at Isaac Newton School from 1959-1963.
I don't know what the official address was, as the school had two entrances.
One entrance was in Portobello Road, but what I think was the main entrance was in Lancaster Road.
I don't know if it was called Portobello Road School prior to Isaac Newton, but it was originally called Portobello Road School when built. If you look at the picture, there is a stone inset behind the lamp bearing the only visible word, School. If you do a street view on Google earth at another angle, you will see that the words 'Portobello Road' are indeed above the word school.
Incidentally, there was another school on the east side of Portobello Road called Colville School and the entrance is in Lonsdale Road. But in my day, there was an entrance in Portobello Road.

I was at Isaac Newton from1958 to '65. The school was on two sites: the lower school on Lancaster Road east of Ladbroke Grove with an entrance there and another on Portobello Road. The upper school was on Wornington Road north of Golborne. I don't know what happened to the lower school, the site would be very attractive to developers, but the upper school building appears to still be there, but I've only seen it when passing into Paddington on a train.

This is a very late reply to a request back in 2009 about Portobello Road School. I was looking on streetview for a chemist's shop once owned by my great uncle (Henry Reginald Manning) and the shop, which was at 270 Portobello Road is now an arcade but on the walk is an ornate plaque which says Portobello  Road School. I was looking up the history of the school and found your request.

You have to do a fair bit of swivelling to find it but it's quite visible if you get the right angle.
