MAYHEW Eliza marriage banns Coddenham between 1863-1870
« on: Saturday 14 February 09 23:39 GMT (UK) »
I have an ancestor Eliza Mayhew who was born in coddenham Suffolk in 1846.

I have found her living with a husband William Penwarden in the 1881 census living in St Mary Middlesex aged 36.  I have been looking unsuccessfully for a marriage between Eliza Mayhew and William Penwarden.    When I looked for any William Penwarden marriages before 1881 I found an entry for :-

Wm Penwarden marriage to Eliza Butt  June 1870 in St Pancras

I am wondering whether Eliza Mayhew may have married a man with the surname Butt, and then married Wm Penwarden.

Does anyone have access to the bans for Coddenham to check for me to see if Eliza Mayhew did marry a Mr Butt before 1870.   I think we would be looking at at possible date between 1863 and 1870.

Thank you very much for your help

There is no Butt/Mayhew marriage on freebmd but also - there is no Eliza Butt b Suffolk 1845-1847 on either the 1851 or 1861 censuses

As you know her father was George - you could order a copy of the 1870 marriage cert but put a condition on your application that you only want it if the brides father was George Mayhew

If it's the wrong one - the GRO will only charge you a £3 search fee

Re: Banns.  If she did marry previously - it may not have been in Suffolk so there will be no banns there

Thank you very much Carole for your reply.

Thank you for clarifying the fact that Wm Penwarden married Sarah A Biggs rather than Eliza Butt.  At least that line of enquiry can be put to rest.

I expect Eliza Mayhew married Wm Penwarden in a church in London that hasnt been transcribed yet.  I might have to trail through the marriage index to find their marriage.

It is strange that I cant find either of them in the 1871 census.
She was living in Coddenham with her parents in 1861 and in 1881 they were living at  2 Rose Hill Cottages St Mary Paddington as husband and wife.

The wedding must have been between 1863 - 1881.  That is a lot of years to check.!

I have looked at the transcribed marriages for Wm Penwarden between these dates on Free BMD and there is no marriage listed to Eliza Mayhew.

Back to the drawing board!

Thanks for your help

Hi Caron

How far back on your Mayhew's have you got?

I am researching the Mayhews of Sweffling and Rendham, then the came from Monewden and near the Ipswich Norwich road before that. Samuel Mayhew born in 1748 died in 1812 in Sweffling.

Hi Caron

Do you know for definite that she married a William Penwarden or were you assuming it was the right Eliza because of the birthyear and birthplace?

Ben.

Thank you for your enquiry about the ancestors. My Mayhews  all came from Coddenham and I think I have got back to 1776 with help from other Genes researchers who have also got the same lineage.

Good luck with your research regards caron
