Can't find his birth.

Do you have him on censuses?

In case not ...
Samuel is in the 1861 census aged 3, transcribed as GAPP (which is what it seems to say), born Plymouth.  His mother Caroline is Head and has two ROBINS children as well as some GAPP children.  RG9/1444/68/9.
Marriage of John GOFF with Caroline Amelia WILLIAMS on the same page is on FreeBMD, 1854.

In 1871, he is Samuel GOFF aged 13, b Plymouth, with parents John & Caroline.  RG10/2123/6/5

Hi Japp,

Thank you for your reply.
I have got a feeling Samuel's birth index is probably in the qtr that is unreadable in 1857 :'(

Thank you for the census, i actually found him in the 1861 census with his mother Caroline and siblings yesterday morning. Caroline's first marriage was with William Robins m 1844 and found her with her children in 1851 but no husband William.

The problem is i can't find John Goff Caroline's second hubby in 41,51 and 61 census

Hi Pam,

Do you have the marriage cert of John & Caroline?

It might help to know the name and occupation of John's father, and also John's occupation ...

Hi Jap,

Not at this time, i am researching the Goff family for a good friend of mine. I will be chatting to her this evening about getting John & Caroline's marriage cert.

However, after my last post, I did find John Goff in 1861 as a seaman(navy)

I think in the end i will have to go to DFH to ask for baptism & marriage and perhaps buriel search.

Thank you Jap

Hi again Pam,

Yes, I'd noticed that 1861 John GOFF - but he's recorded as 'Single'.  Could be an error, of course.

I note that - though John was Labourer in 1871 - in 1881, John is recorded as a Naval Pensioner.

The National Archives has an online document (downloadable for a fee) in Admiralty records for a John GOFF born Plymouth, volunteered 23 May 1854, and with another date (birthdate?) recorded, namely 28 April 1831.

This seems to be him in 1851 - mistranscribed as GOTT.

Hi again Jap,

I did notice that too John was unmarried in 1861 census, sometime i don't take too much notice of that, as i have many like that in my own tree on census returns.

Would it be possible to point me in the right direction for the NA where John Goff is, i am not brill looking at the N A site.. many thanks

I did not think of Gott surname, i searched for other variations of Goff, Gough, Goffe etc.

Thank you so kindly for your help, it is much appreciated on my behalf

Pam
