Workington Look Up Please
« on: Wednesday 18 February 09 15:09 GMT (UK) »
Hello there!

I am trying to find the baptism of a William Summerson in Workington about the 1770 to 1790 period.  He and (I presume) his brother Robert were both married and having children in Penshaw parish Co Durham in the early 1800s and Workington was marked as their parish of birth.

Any information about them, their parents and siblings would be much appreciated.

Many thanks in advance

Ashley

Hi Geoff

Yes I had seen that one, and on one website I found a marriage for Robert Summerson and Eleanor Simpson in 1777.  I think they are the parents of the children I am looking for as the first child born to William Summerson in Penshaw was George Simson Summerson.

The gaps in the IGI can be quite frustrating!

Cheers

Ashley

Like I said it is an unusual name ... if you search batch C011872 using parents' names Robert and Eleanor (no surname, no date), you'll find some interesting variations, including your missing kids ... perhaps seven of them 1782-97!

If you go here http://tinyurl.com/cvw3zc you will find Robert's occupation.

Thanks for the pointer - that is a really good one!  But.....

When I look through the batch I still can't come up with my William - there is a Wm Somerset with parents William and Eleanor but that is not the right forename for the father.

Hmmmmmmm...

Sorry, I messed up there.  There was also a John SOMERSET same day.

Having raised these doubts, you have to wonder what Robert and Eleanor were doing between 1775 and 1782 ;)

Note that the 1773 marriage was for a Thomas SOMERSON - and two of the SOMERSET baptisms had father Thomas.

Perhaps the vicar just wrote the wrong name ::)

My husband is a descendant of the Workington SUMMERSON family - I'd be very interested to be able to discuss this with you.
