Wedding lookup help COMPLETED
« on: Wednesday 18 February 09 18:45 GMT (UK) »
Hi again

I am a bit stuck (thanks to a strange relative) looking for a wedding. The names i am looking for are James BEVINS and a female BREVINGTON. I know that they had a daughter in 1940 but there were also two sons so i dont know the exact year of marriage. Have done the usual searches but haven't had any luck. Could someone here possibly help?

The relative i have asked flatly refuses to tell me James Bevins' wife's first name. Has said that it is none of my business. Rather strange as all concerned are dead and i am in no way looking to unearth skeletons. I respect their wish though and rather than push would like to find the information out myself.

Thanks in advance
lisa

Hi

Have you only looked at the partially transcribed index on freebmd?    As they may have married in the 1930’s, transcriptions for those years are very thin on the ground

You will need to search the full GRO index  which is available at your nearest main library.   It can also be searched online if you have an Ancestry subscription or at www.findmypast.com which is a paysite

The last entry on freebmd for a birth for anybody with the surname Brevington was 1894 in Rotherham so it was not a common surname

Hi Carol

Thanks for the reply. I have an Ancestry subscription (amongst others!!) and have searched the main indexes until my eyes are bleeding but no luck as yet!!!!  Will keep searching. It never ceases to amaze me how the nearer you get to the present day, the harder it is!

There is another possible way - if you know the names and birthyears of any of the children - get a copy of a birth cert to confirm that maiden name.

However - one of the things you need to be aware of is that it could have been a second marriage for the female which can hamper a search. Example:

Female Brevington marries John Smith
John Smith dies
Female Smith marries James Bevins but birth certs of Bevins children will show maiden name as Brevington unless you are lucky and it shows both

Good thought Carol!
I have ordered my Aunt Marina's birth certificate and it should be here within the next ten days or so. I guess i am impatient though there is nothing quite like opening the certificate envelope knowing that there are answers inside!

my Aunt is going to give me problems with her own marriage! Marina Bevins married a ? Brogan and i cant fid that either at the moment! Its the trickiest part of my tree apart from my Irish roots!!

Still, its the challenge that keeps us doing it isnt it.!

The 1916-2005 birth index only has the one birth in 1940 with the surname Bevins and mmn you mentioned.

Looks like the boys were from a different marriage?

Maybe dad was married before and that's why the realtives are being cagey about giving you any further info.

Just a bit of advice- please don't post names of living people here on Rootschat, you will find the moderators will remove them.
