Connor/Conner-Tasmania
« on: Wednesday 18 February 09 21:22 GMT (UK) »
Good morning,
I am hoping to finish the circle on Barnard Connor who married Catherine Downey in Tasmania. Catherine married Robert Hutton who died in 1880 at Waratah and then remarried Barnard Connor on 22 May 1883. The marriage is listed as Emu Bay, but would have taken place in Waratah.

We have lots of information on Catherine and Robert from a previous thread http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,331029.0.html
but we don't yet have anything on Barnard. We do know that when Catherine died in 1919 in Victoria she was listed as a widow. When Barnard and Catherine married in 1883 Catherine was 50 and Barnard was 70.

Would love to know when he died and how he got to Tasmania.......and anything else that is available.

Cheers
Susie

Hi Susie,

Barnard may have been previously married

Barnard CONNOR aged 36 = Bridget VEALE aged 23 21 Jun 1852 (ref 612)

Bridget CONNOR died 10 Apr 1879 aged 50 years Spouse B (ref 123)

Dear Kris,
This probably is Barnard........there is a 3 year age difference and the different spelling of Connor/Conner (which Catherine herself did between marriage/will and death) but I reckon it's a good chance it's him. He and Bridget appear to have no children and it must have been a shock to have 7  stepchildren!

Cheers
Susie

Yes certainly must have been a bit of a shock particularly as he was so much older than Catherine. Must have been a bit like living with the grandchildren full time.

I wonder if Barnard may have been a convict.

There is a Bernard CONNOR arriving in 1842 from Londonderry (15 Years) and just to confuse appears to be a second one from Antrim (7 Years)  ???

I am not experienced with Convicts so will leave others to follow on.

Dear Kris,
I am not convict savvy either.....so hoping one of our very clever Tasmanian researchers can sort out the right Barnard........would love to know when and where he died as it may have been in Victoria.

Cheers

Yes it seems really hard to get to the right page. Here is the Londonderry one who arrived aboard the Kinnear (aged 30)
