Can you date please?
« on: Thursday 19 February 09 15:15 GMT (UK) »
Hello all,

This is a photo of my great, great, grandmother, Sarah Ann Britton. It was taken by Charles C Palman in Portobello Road, Notting Hill.

The identity of the baby is unknown.

Sarah was born in 1839 and died in 1909.

Judging from her appearance it is thought that this could have been taken about 1907/8. Can anyone confirm this, or advise please?

Jo

Ahaaaaaa ;D

Perhaps the reason we couldn't find anything about "Charles C Palman" is that his name is actually Charles O Pulman ;D

His studios were located at 324 Portobello Road from 1892-1893, so that gives you a time window as good as anything I've ever seen on the photo board...really narrows it down for you! :)

Cheers,

Hello Irene and China,

It seems I need glasses! I shall be at the opticians tomorrow.

Thank you very much indeed. The colour photo brings it to life so much more.

The date(s) have come as something of a shock. The various reltaives who are descended from this lady were all of the impression it was much older. We need to have a rethink about the identity of the baby!

Thanks again.

Jo.

As an utter novice at dating, but trying hard  ;) I think the photographer's dates are confirmed by the dress with its "kick up" shoulders................am I right, o ye costume experts?   :)

That's good enough for me, Paula.

Do you think the baby had a lovely woolly vest on too?  What a dress!!!!!!!!!!!!! ;D

Not much chance of draughts getting through that lot
