William Lowe b. 1877 Sherburn in 1890 and 1901 censuses PLS!
« on: Thursday 19 February 09 16:58 GMT (UK) »
Hello Rootschatters! Here's what I have found so far: In 1881 census in Washington at #1 Colly Cottages William Lowe, age 3 b. Sherburn with his Mother, Mary Ann age 36 b. Trimdon and 2 other siblings: Margaret age 12 and Joseph age 1. (RG11:4983/75 p. 22). One of the problems is that Mary Ann is reported as married to a miner, yet he is not listed! Also, the gaps between the children are troubling. So, can anyone find the family in 1890? I THINK William emigrated to the USA (West Virginia) in 1901 so I doubt he can be found in 1901...And, finally, altho William was not alive in 1870, perhaps the family will have some younger children who may have died before 1880.  Thank you so very much for ANY assistance!   ;D  Pat

Looks like in 1881 Joseph is a 'visitor' at Crossgate in Durham.

Pat --

The William you refer to is my granduncle, Mary Ann my great grandmother, Joseph my grandfather and Margaret my grandaunt. They left Durham in 1882 for the U.S. shortly after my grandaunt Jane was born in November. They originally settled in Pennsylvania, but moved to West Virginia not long after.

What would you like to know about the family and how are you related to us?

-- Randall

Hello Randall! AND, a warm welcome to Rootschat!  :)   I am afraid that I am terribly embarrassed because I made my original posting in 2009 and was convinced that Joseph Lowe's wife, Mary Ann, was connected to me on a collateral line.  HOWEVER, soon afterwards, i had a loss of data including my notes, which lead me to your Lowe family.  If I may beg your indulgence, could you tell me the maiden name of your Mary Ann? I tried to find a marriage on he freebmd site and could not seem to find an appropriate match.  Thank you for your understanding and perhaps we can re-construct my loss leading to your Lowe family. Most sincerely, patrexjax

Pat --

Mary Ann's maiden name was Molyneux. She was born in Trimdon, Sedgefield, Durham County on May 9, 1848 and died in West Virginia on April 5, 1929. Her father was Michael Mark Molyneux (1813-1900) and her mother was Mary Roper (1813-1877).

Mary Ann married my great-grandfather (Joseph) on September 15, 1866 at St. Peter's Church in Sacriston, Durham County. The reason you do not find my great-grandfather in the 1881 census is because he was in the U.S. making arrangements for the family to move here.

Hope this helps! If you need more information, do not hesitate to ask.

Hello Randall and thank you so much for that information. I am thinking that I was looking for further information on William Lowe b 1877 in Sherburne because he might have married into one of my collateral lines. Sadly, I cannot "put my finger" on  which family that was due to my missing notes. Per chance, do you happen to know anymore details about William b 1877.  ??? I really appreciate your patience and understanding as to my dilemma. Most sincerely, Pat

Hello again! Yes, you are "spot on" and I have found your Lowe family exactly where you said they would be.  ;D  Thank you for your responses and at this point I cannot see any connection, although one never knows! Most sincerely, Pat
