No matter whether the original is in monotone or colour, you should always scan in "colour" mode to get the best results, as it picks up the various tones better

Ah, that's better

Having had a bit of a think over this one I'd guess at about 1855, which is very early for an ambrotype (early for photography in general). I'm basing my guess on the girls' skirt style, the hats, and the fact that they don't seem to be wearing pantaloons. It's also pretty fuzzy for an ambrotype, which produces a very clear and detailed picture.

Well, that's my guess...
