GIBSON & GRIERSON
« on: Sunday 22 February 09 14:07 GMT (UK) »
Hello

I am looking for the family of James Gibson (1773? - Gribton, 1832), who married Mary McCall (1782, Leadhills - 1863, Gribton).

Their son Alexander Gibson (1805?, Glencairn - 29 September 1878, Dumfries) was my ggg grandfather. He married Janet Grierson (5 October 1806, Glencairn - 24 August 1868, Dumfries) on 17 June 1827. Janet was the daughter of James Grierson (20.5.1765-28.11.1851) and Isabel McMillan (born Holywood, 16 August 1782). Her grandparents were James Grierson and Elspeth Nicholson (1731-1788) and, possibly, William McMillian and Janet McKeand or McKane.

Other known children of James Gibson: Robert (1819? - Wanlockhead, 24 Jan 1848) and Isabella (born 24 Feb 1807, Glencairn). Robert Gibson married Margaret Brown of Gelston on 30 May 1845.

Hi  :)

was Alexander the first born son?

If so, the most likely baptism for James would be:

17 July 1774, Closeburn Parents - Alexander Gibson and Betty Richie.

I'll see if I can get a full listing of James's children to see if the traditional naming conventions were use.

The only bpt that is coming up on the IGI and Scotland's people is that of Isabella, which you have - 24 Feb 1807, Glencairn.

What is interesting is that there is a Thomas Gibson and Ann Callan having children in Glencairn at the same time. One of which is Alexander Gibson, bpt 12 Feb 1805.

Do you have the names of Mary McCall's parents?

I'll answer my own question  :D

Robert McCall and Isabel McKonnen

The Closeburn baptism for James is looking quite promising.

The only bpt that is coming up on the IGI and Scotland's people is that of Isabella, which you have - 24 Feb 1807, Glencairn.

Yes, we have run into the same problems – impossible to find a definite date of birth for Alexander and Robert. We know the approximate year because of the family gravestone in Holywood Churchyard:

In Memory of James Gibson, who died at Gribton on the 17th of December 1832 aged 59 years Also Robert Gibson, son of the above, who died at Wanlockhead 24th January 1848 aged 30 years Also Mary McCall, spouse of the above, who died at Gribton Lodge 17th Jan 1863 aged 82 years Also Janet Grierson, wife of Alexander Gibson their son, mason in Dumfries, who died there 24th August 1868 aged 63 years Also Margaret Gibson their daughter, who died there 25th October 1868 aged 35 years Also Janet Gibson their daughter, who died there 18th July 1871 aged 29 years Also the said Alexander Gibson, who died there 29th Sept 1878 aged 73 years Erected by Mary McCall his spouse

What is interesting is that there is a Thomas Gibson and Ann Callan having children in Glencairn at the same time. One of which is Alexander Gibson, bpt 12 Feb 1805.

Yes, we believe that is just a coincidence. I have been in contact with members of that family. Their Alexander fits in nicely, but it is the wrong family! I believe this family had children Alexander (1805), James (1811), Thomas (1813), Janet (1814), Samuel (1815), William (1817)?

Do you have the names of Mary McCall's parents?

Yes, as you correctly write, we believe it is Robert McCall and Isabel McKonnen (or Isabella McConner).

You have been most helpful!!

The censuses that I've looked at all have Alexander b. Glencairn 1805-1807. There might be some relationship between the two Glencairn families (i.e. James and Thomas Gibson) but further back.

Yes, I would presume so too. I do know that, of that family, James Smith Gibson (c. 1811-1884) married Margaret Grierson (1811-1876) in Glencairn in 1835, so there is another Gibson/Grierson union, of which there seems to be a lot in our family. But I have checked and Margaret Grierson is, to all intents and purposes, not a (close) relative of my ggg grandmother Janet Grierson.

Here are the Gibson bpts from Closeburn 1760 -1785, father Alexander:

To Alexander Gibson  and Sar(r)ah Gibson

31 May 1767 Thomas
29 May 1769 Sarrah
14 Feb 1772 Thomas (first one probably died)

To Alexander Gibson and Bettie Richie

17 July 1774 James
16 Feb 1777 Jean
23 Feb 1779 Bettie
6 Nov 1781 John

At the moment, I've not checked for any possible Banns/Marriages but it might be that Sarrah died and Alexander married again. This might mean that Thomas nad James were half sibs.

Just a thought!
