Chirk 1861 census
« on: Thursday 26 February 09 14:21 GMT (UK) »
hello list,
I am researching my family who lived in and around Chirk and have come across a list of about 20 houses in the 1861 census grouped under the address "Nant". I can't ever recall hearing the name when I was living in Chirk .
I guess the name changed over the years to one I may recognise, but I am curious to where the original "Nant" was since I think a family member may have lived there.
Any help would be most welcome
Keith

Hi Keith  :D

Welcome and all that. I think you know me but I don't use my real name on here  ;)

Have you got the census ref and I'll have a look.

Getting back to your original query ~

Can you put up the census ref or give me a name, age of a person living in the houses and I'll have a look as well.

Hi Gadget,
Small world. If you look on the 1861 Chirk census and search on the name Mary Northall, age 69 resident in Chirk you will come across Nant as the name of the 20 or so houses in which she lived. On the subsequent census many of the names reappear living in the Lower Barracks. I can't recall 20 houses in the L/B's certainly not today.  No-one in Chirk I have spoken to have been able to help, so I'll be most interested if you can shed any light!!
Thanks
Keith

Just been looking at it in relation to a modern map and the description of the Enumeration District (Chirk 14)  It's between The Lodge and Pen y Park. Nant means a valley/gorge (I think).

It's not Black Park or Halton. I'm wondering if it could be that area between Whitehurst and Pentre - Bryn yr Eos.

Is there anything in Neville Hurdsman's book about it at all?

I'll have a look at the Old Maps site.

Lots of familiar names on those pages!

The only place that fits is ,as you say, Lower Barracks. I do know that there were a few houses knocked down around there at one stage and along Green Lane. That's how my Henry Roberts and family moved to Chirk Green in the 1880s/1890s.
