GODDEN - Bures, SFK - Look up please

I took advantage of Ancestry at our local library yesterday but struggled to read some information and hoped SKS might be able to decipher a marital status for me please

The lady I'm interested in is my 4x Gt Grandmother Jemima GODDEN, born 1824/5 in Bures, SFK.

I found her in the following census returns but couldn't worked out whether she was an unmarried mother or widower.. I'm more inclined to Widower.

1871 - Living with mother Jemima (Head, age 46, occ Laundry, b Bures Suffolk) and George Stapleton (age 36, occ Boarder)

In 1871 she is shown as a Widow.

Looked back to 1851 when she is again shown as a widow:

1851 Bures St. Mary

Jemima Godden   W   21 (?)    Occupation looks like 'do some washing' !!!
                                                                            b. Bures St. Mary
John Godden     son    7                                                ditto
Hannah Godden  dau.  4                                               ditto
George Godden  son    2                                               ditto

NBI shows 2 Godden burials at Bures St. Mary in the time frame:

John Godden   34   bur. 15/3/1851
Edward Godden  37   bur. 25/8/1848

Cannot find a marriage between a John or Edward to a Jemima.

I love the 'do some washing' occupation.  Sounds like something my little one would tell his teacher I do for a job !

If Jemima was married you would need to find her marriage first to find her maiden name so that you could then find her baptism. However, it may be worth contacting the volunteer who offers lookups from the Bures St Mary Parish Records at The Suffolk Surnames List to look at Jemima's childrens' baptisms first.

This will give the name of her husband if she was married or indicate whether she was in fact a single mother.  If she was married they could save you the cost of a certificate as parish records post 1837 give all the information found on a GRO marriage certificate.

Jemima STAPLETON with same details.



It looks like John was born before their marriage,

John STAPLETON    Jun Q 1843    Sudbury    12  442
