don't worry -I'm just down the road from where they come from - if we get stiuck I can always see what there is in eastwood Library!!!

well I've made some progress.

on 1901 census - it lists Violet ethel Chambers age 9 -as daughter of Edward - I think Violet ethel was really Violet ethel swinscoe -so would be the daughter of hannah

it seems there is a sister with Alice as one of her names

Birth freeBMD
Liziemond Alice E Chambers
Mar qtr 1903
Basford
7b 164

1911 census has only been part released and is quite expensive to look at , at the moment - and due to copyright issues we aren't allowed to post full details

However you can do a free search - so through trial and error - putting in who would be living in the house I have discovered that
living in Eastwood basford reg district in the same household are
Edward Chambers b 1867
hannah chambers  1867
violet ethel swinscoe  1892
james chamber 1893
Edward Chambers 1894
Ada harriet Chambers 1901
Lizziemond Alice Eliza Chambers 1903

if you want further details you would have to pay for the transcript or image

but this looks very much like them

so it seems Violet Ethel is hannah's child
James , Edward and mary Eliabeth are the children of Edward and mary (Christian)
Emma Frances, Ada harriet and Liziemond Alice Eliza are the children of Edward and hannah (Swinscoe)

if you go to freeBMD
http://images.freebmd.org.uk/

you can look up birth /death/marriage regs free

put basford in District

and then you can find when births were registered -this will confirm -by date of mary's deathreg which children are from which marriage

I'll look for mary and hanna pre marriage now

Just aquick question suz

What would be the best way to get copies of certificates and photos of the area at the time? Due to being in Australia it is a bit hard to look at the archives.  :)

You can order certificates online from GRO - cost £7 British pounds each

I'll post the link in a mo

Eastwood Local History society publish booklets with old pictures of the area .

Eastwood is an old mining town and als the birthplace of DH lawrence - so there is a lot of heritage work been done - just up the road from "nethergreen"-where mary lived in 1871 is durban House -a building which many years ago was where the local miners went to collect their wages - they have postcards for sale - also DH Lawrence's birthplace is no a museum and also has postcards literature.

I'll post the link for the GRO and also see if I can find some links for pictures

All the addresses I have come across on the census still exist today

You are answering my questuons as I write them  :D

I was given photocopies of 2 newspaper clippings one about Edwards death, and another about his brother Benjamin's death. Im sure these would help but unfortunatley my scanner isn't working :(

If you post the dates of death I can probably look them up in the newspapers in the library

this is the link for GRO (general register Office)
http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/

if you order certificates (always a good idea to confirn findings) you will need the page and volume ref from freeBMD - please check them first - I always worry I have hit the wrong key!!!!!!

Both of the Clippings don't have the date of thier deaths  :(

Both of them have been copied onto the one page and they look like they have been cut so I can't tell what newspaper they came out of. Although Edwards cliping has at the top "vertiser, friday, october 27th" so im guessing there was a newspaer called The Advertiser, pity it doesn't say the year  :(

here are some photos taken in 1950/60's - don't think it would have changed much since 1900
