Thanks Leanne,

You're welcome.  I'm sorry i didn't see your earlier request.  The last weeks have been filled with Chicken-pox, limiting the amount of time i've had to *browse*.

Good luck with your requests to the archives.

Progress report #1...

Nice email with disclaimer form to complete and send back for them to come up with a quotation.  Form completed and returned.

Progress report #2...

Success!  The system worked - eventually.

As Leanne said, the payment was requested by international bank draft (why don't they get a credit card machine?).  But, for such a small amount (R25), that was ridiculous.  So I sent R40 in notes and that worked.

As you can see, however, everything seems to take two to three months there!  And, although the papers didn't add much knowledge, it was great to get actual copies of them.

my dad's uncle Albert DOUGLAS worked IN S Africa - I think probably Cape Town

He almost certainly died there

There are some estate papers dated 1956 - i have seen a visit to the UK in 1955

ths is a man who reported his occupation on the passenger list to uk in 1950 as "rich"

Am I right that I can't order through the genalogical society?

'Fraid so.  That's what triggered this thread.  If you read back, you'll see that we've had successes going direct, but the payment is cumbersome and it takes time.

Can I say though that the people in the archives are very helpful and have always replied to my emails.

Thanks

This s not central to me - and my Dad can't remember exactly when uncle Albert died - but might have considered this is if it had been the cheaper rate
