1911 transcriptions

I have reported a lot of transcription errors to the web site and today had some replies.
They have said that they believe they are correct.
So if you are looking for an ancestor in Sedgeberrow try typing in Surlgeberrow and if your great uncle was Jack try Vach as an alternative. Oh almost forgot Cropthorne is Crowthorpe, but hey, I must be wrong.

They say Our policy is to only accept changes if they match the entry on the original page, and we are unable to make changes based on information supplied to us from a different source.
So you have to view the original page for 30 credits to submit any errors.

I do have all the originals and as I still live in the area I am 100% sure that I am correct I don't mind myself because I realise what the place names are. If you don't live where your ancestors came from I can imagine a whole lot of made up place names on family trees.

They said that to me too ...............so I emailed them the scan of gt-grandmas birth certificate  - figured they couldnt say an ORIGINAL 1875 birth cert was a different source! (it has the original date on it!)
Got an email back saying they would amend the error, that was several weeks ago tho & they havent done it yet.

I've just received one of these emails.
I sent in several corrections, but I don't know to which one this refers, as it only gives a reference number.
I only sent ones where I had seen the original & the transcription was clearly wrong, so I don't know why it hasn't been accepted.

Same here, Betty.  I even spent some credits to check the originals before I submitted the errors found on the transcripts

One of the transcriptions I sent a correction for, had the stepson's name as the stepdaughter
and the stepdaughter was missed off entirely yet was on the original.  How can that be correct?

Had transcription problems myself, i.e. Sydney Harold Luffman shown as Sydney Harrold Suffoma, how do they get that one? Also a batch of Luffman entries shown as Suffman, a name that does not exist. They can't tell a capital copperplate L from an S. Luckily Rootschat gave a solution, i.e. Christian name, place and year of birth, punctuation marks for the surname. This works, but sometimes takes a few attempts.

However the birth certificate is no proof that the census transcribers got it wrong.
Transcribers should only write what they see not what they think or know it should be.
