« on: Wednesday 04 March 09 21:21 GMT (UK) »
Hi, I am trying to find out what I can about one Elizabeth ( Betty ) Hamlin,

I have her bapt. as 24 Feb 1749 at Middlezoy.

I have a marriage to John Baker on 21 Nov 1771 at Middlezoy.

I have a marriage to George Hosier on 21 Oct 1781.

I have her death or burial on 17 Sep 1824 at Middlezoy.

What I an trying to establish is her date of birth, but have found no evidence

so far.

Can anyone help, Please.

Sometimes the actual date of birth is not given  :(

True, but I was thinking that there might be a clue elsewhere,

possibly her age at death, or something like that.

The various transcripts one sees are fine up to a point,

but I know that the original records often have little comments

added by the incumbent into the margins, and these are often

omitted from later copies.

The point is that her mothers husband died in 1746, and I want to know

if she was at least conceived prior to this. Her bapt. shows mother but no

father, yet does not say she was base born, which I'm sure it would have

were this the case.

It is not too much of a stretch of imagination to think her newly bereved

mother might wait 3 years before her bapt. but that is not proof.

These  links might be of interest.  It does indicate that she was illegitimate, therefore it is doubtful whether her actual birth date was recorded  :-\

What you really need is  someone who is able to access the Holy Cross parish records for you.

Thanks, I have seen the first 2 links, they base their assumptions upon the fact

that the father was not mentioned. However, it does not say that she was base

born either. He died in 1746, 3 years prior to the bapt. but suppose she was 3 or

more when bapt.? Given that he was not present at the service, would they enter

his name, he could neither confirm nor deny paternity.

I can find no paternity inquest nor bastardy order relating to her.

I would just like to prove one way or the other, without jumping to conclusions.

I have been told that Betty was buried as Betty Baker, so she was using her first

husbands surname. I suspect that at the time of her death she was living with one

of her children from this marriage, and this may be why.

Has anyone made an index of the monumental inscriptions from Middlezoy, I am

hoping it says her age at death on the stone, or perhaps it is shown in the burial

register, or the churchwardens books.

Our local FHS supplied volunteers who went to every churchyard in our district

gathering data for the NBI. as did most other area FHS groups, but I'm not sure if

Somerset took part in it.
