Shawheath union workhouse
« on: Thursday 05 March 09 14:56 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

Can anyone tell me where the records are kept for the ShawHeath Union Workhouse please? and what if anything, they can tell me about my relative?
I contacted Stockport Library and they dont have the admission records there for the years 1912-1917.
My Great Grandma died there, and she had a daughter born 1911. I would like to know if my Nan was also in the workhouse with her when she died in 1917.
Im also on the track of Nantwich Union workhouse records as my Great Great Grandma also died in that one along with 3 of her babies.

Nantwich- Cheshire and Chester Archives and Local Studies Service, Cheshire Record Office, Duke Street, Chester, Cheshire CH1 1RL. Holdings include: Guardians' minutes (1842-1930, with gaps); Register of inmates (1925-49); etc.

Shaw Heath- Stockport Central Library, Wellington Road South, Stockport SK1 3RS. Most records were destroyed during World War 2. Surviving records include: Workhouse Births and Deaths (1850-1904, indexed); Lists of inmates and removals (1841-3); Lists of paupers (1837-43, 1853-73 with gaps; Register of deaths and diseases (1874-95); etc.

Thank you for that Stan, much appreciated. Guess im of for a trip to cheshire in search of Nantwich records to see if  i can find  her and her 3 babies! Do you or anyone else know exactly what the Guardian's minutes would tell me?

As for Shawheath, Stockport emailed me back and were extrememly helpful on other matters, but unfortunately they have no surviving records for that time period. Seems my great grandma's admission etc to Shawheath is going to remain a complete mystery to me and my family, which is a shame. My mother and my aunt have so many questions they would like answered. I feel i have exhausted all avenues on those years.
