still working on this - but just to give an update..

I've shown (a cropped version of) this to some biker buddies - and
the best estimate of the make of bike is a Rudge ... attached is a photo
of a 1914 version, which is very similar. We think this is a little older
than the model in your photo as the brakes and drive system are more primitive .

I've put in a query with my registrations expert.. might take a day or
two for him to get back..

Registrations started in 1903 and YI may have been the second letter
series assigned to county Dublin, but not sure yet when they started
to use this.

traced the registration letter use :

Dublin prefix YI started in April 1921 and finished in March 1927

Well done Shane, your a gem.  I am guessing that the man in the pic was my gt.uncle but all I have on him is he was born 1886-7 in Wexford then had a turf accountants in 1928 in Carlow.  If it is him he would have been about 30 when this was taken.  Wexford may give up some more clues at the end of this month. best estimate for the date of registration of the bike is Spring/Summer 1922 - might be able to narrow that down.

as a fellow biker I've been looking at the possibilities for the model of bike - learnt quite a bit about early 20th century models as a result and found some very interesting details as a result of my discussions with fellow Irish Bikers...

many of the bikes from this timeframe have similar features but the best matches are  Rudge, Velocette, BSA and the best match a Raleigh Racer  (photo attached). This is made by the bicycle company - which may account for the bicycle like features..

I'll stop new before I put everyone to sleep with techie details...

I was in Wexford this week but no joy with the 'man on the motor cycle'.  He remains a mystery but I did spot August 1925 written in the corner above Brown Street, so that puts it between the dates suggested by Shane.  Came away from Wexford empty handed as far as research goes but enjoyed the trip never-the-less.  Anne

My great grandma Mary Anne Holden (nee O'Neill) was living on Brown Street at the time of this photo with her large family. Four of her sons left to fight in WW1 from brown Street - one never returned
