Any children for George & Martha HEAVENS ?
« on: Saturday 07 March 09 10:24 GMT (UK) »
Good morning,

George HEAVENS b. Faringdon 1804 - son of Angel & Martha HEAVENS - married Martha ROLLANS in Bicester on 2nd February 1829.

Martha was a widow and considerably older than George, probably as much as 20 years.

However, in the 1851 Census they have in their household a granddaughter, Martha LAY aged 9 (Domicile: London Street, Faringdon)
Which presupposes that George & Martha might have had at least one daughter who married a Mr. LAY. However, given that they were married in 1829, it seems rather unlikely that a daughter, even born in late 1829, would have been married and had a child of 9 years old in 1851.

The alternative is that Martha Junior was a grandchild from Martha Senior's previous marriage with Mr. ROLLANS, wherever that might have been.

I would be very grateful if anyone with access to Faringdon PR's would nevertheless kindly check to see if by chance George & Martha did produce any children early in their marriage, although Martha would probably have been about 48 when she married George and this seems improbable.

Many thanks,

Nick

Good Morning Nick

From the 1861 Census it seems that Martha Lay was the daughter of Henry Lay. In the 1861 and 1851 Censuses Henry is shown as being married to "Eliza" but in 1841 his wife was "Mary".

It is possible that Mary died and Henry remarried.

Possible records which support this:

Marriages Jun 1840
BOWLER  Susannah    Faringdon  6 245
CLACK  Ann     Faringdon  6 245
DAVIS  Abraham     Faringdon  6 245
GARDINER  Mary Ann     Faringdon  6 245
JEFFERIES  Henry     Faringdon  6 245
LAY  Henry     Faringdon  6 245
PETTIFER  George     Faringdon  6 245
SEARY  Sarah     Faringdon  6 245

Deaths Jun 1845   LAY  Mary Ann     Farringdon  6 124

Marriages Sep 1847
Faulkner  Ann Matilda    Faringdon  6 265
GORTON  Stephen     Faringdon  6 265
Griffin  Richard     Faringdon  6 265
Judd  Eliza     Faringdon  6 265
LAY  Henry     Faringdon  6 265
PAGE  Sarah     Farringdon  6 265
SAWBRIDGE  William     Farringdon  6 265
Williams  Eliza     Farringdon  6 265

The most likely birth record for Martha Lay is as follows:

Births Dec 1841   Lay  Martha     Farringdon  6 171

and the birth certificate should give you the mother's maiden name.

Presumably you need to find a connection between Martha's mother and Martha Rollans on the basis that if Martha was about 44 when she married George (deduced from age 66 in 1851) then either she had an illegitimate child at some stage or (perhaps more likely) that she was married before.

Regards

Ivan

Hi Soreau

Have you got the BBI? There is your Angel and Martha there:

Angel Heavens, buried 23 Jun 1839 aged 67, Faringdon all Saints
Martha Heavens, buried 11 Jan 1813 aged 41,     ditto

also another
Martha Heavens, buried 13 Feb 1835, aged 2,     ditto

a possible granddaughter?
Let me know if you want me to transcribe more

Good evening Matt,

Many thanks for that info. No, I do't have the BBI unfortunately. I didn't have the burials of Angel & Martha so that was 2 extra infos that have been very useful.

Martha Junior I did have, and she was a granddaughter.

If you have Elijah HEAVENS who died November 1875
George HEAVENS who died 1stQ 1868

Am also looking for death or burial of John HAVENS (or HEAVENS) born 1732 in Longcot. Very probably died there but after 1784.

Your time and trouble much appreciated.

Nick

Good evening Ivan,

Thanks for all that information.

You've found a very plausible track that's going to be worth following up. Thank you for that. It's a great help. It's give me several ideas.

Thanks for your time.

Sorry there's no John Havens or Heavens died at that time... there is no records for Longcot. The Berks Record Office hold the PR's.

Good morning.

Ian, you're right ! In the flurry of information I hadn't updated my paper files totally. Thanks for putting me right.

Matt, thanks for the info re Longcot. I'll see if I can get anything out of the BRO.

Thanks for your time both of you.

Hi Nick,
We have been in contact before regarding these families through the Hedges mailing list.

Here is John Heavens burial record from the Longcot PR

Burials
1822
Jun 16  John HEAVENS, 90

Had a good innings for those days! Especially given that he was the father of at least 17 children. ;D

All the best,
Lara
