I've sneaked back on again. Thanks for looking that up Silvery.

I looked at the original 1901 and it says Joiners Carpenter to me. I see why they might accidentally transcribe it as fancy confectioner though.

I think this is Charles' birth registration. Brentford covers Chiswick and a September birth could easily be registered in the December quarter.

Births Dec 1881
Charles William Smith     Brentford  3a 98

Henry seems to prefer Southmapton as his place of brith as I think in 1881 they are living at:
Hope Cottage Chiswick
Henry Smith age 26 b Southampton House Carpenter
wife Anne Smith born 1858 Newport Pagnell
nephew William Craft shop boy age 14 b Newport Pagnell
niece Jane Wood age 11 born Newport Pagnell

I looked for Henry and Annie's marriage but it wasn't easy to spot. I would order that birth certifcate and see what it gives you.

That was an outstanding experience, many thanks for all your prompt and enthusiastic help.

Hazel17, that will move me on, obviously some of my oral history is defective.

Barbara F, the link with the BOUCHERS confirms the information, I have previously researched them, much easier than SMITH.

I will be ordering the birth certificate tonight.

Again many thanks to all.

Hello all again, I'm STILL stuck on making progress with my SMITH family.  Can I ask for some more advice please?

Following advice received on my last visit, I now have my paternal grandfather's (Charles William) birth certificate.  I already had his marriage and death ones.  All these certificates' details agree but I cannot locate his parent's wedding certificate.  I have scoured all the internet sites I have found but no luck, two found on the 1911 census do not match.  The last good reference I can find is on the 1901 census RG 13/452 p 139 where his father and mother are shown living in Lubeck Street Battersea.

Their names were HENRY SMITH and ANNIE SMITH (née COOK).  Her place of birth is shown as Newport Pagnell (1891 and 1901) but his is shown as Southampton (1891) and then Luton (1901).

What is the best way to proceed now?

Thanks in advance.
