Laurina, many thanks for those prompt replies, you put 'Heir Hunters' to shame!  I am really grateful.  Initially I had no great hopes with SMITH and COOK but these are very promising.

Hi Laurina, the wedding certificate arrived this morning and confirms previous details, so it is possible to move on (back?) with SMITH.

Regretfully whilst waiting for this certificate another puzzle has arisen.  I absolutely know my paternal grand mother existed; yet I cannot find her death certificate.  Her name was Annie Maria Smith neé Boucher, dob 1882; dod 1940 +/- 2; probable area Brentford Middlesex and yet no record of her death appears on any internet searches.  Can you suggest any way of further research?

Many thanks.

Have you trawled quarter by quarter through the indexes? You will need a subscription to ancestry or findmypast for this.  Free bmd is great by not complete for the 1940s.
Don't forget the date of birth/age might be wrong on the death index as the information is only what the informant knows - which could be wrong. Maybe they didn't know her middle name (or knew her by her middle name). Maybe she died in hospital in an area you are not expecting.
Smith is doable - my first Smith was born 1807 I haven't done bad getting back through them. Still some mysteries though.
