There were actually 3 Charles William Smiths but only the one in London.
I didn't try 1880 or 1882, just 1881.
Direct matriarchal line; ENNIS-Yeatman-Cooper-Papps-Ryland-Lechford/Luxford-Bagshaw-Henriett
ENNIS-Thomas-Bonnin-Aldridge-Williams-Harding-Brown.
ENNIS-Davis/Davies-Buck-Oakley-
JONES-Roberts-Handy-Ross-Warrillow-Eagles-Cotterill-Bailey.
JONES-Walton-Grayson-Stobbs-Baldwin-Ibbotson-Scott.
JONES-Goodwin-Parker-Instant-Hubbard-Hancock-Skinner.

STILL LOOKING FOR: Elizabeth Ann Balfour ENNIS nee DAVIS. Disappeared in Adelaide, South Australia. 1881.

Good evening Barbara F.  Thank you for your continuing interest and offer of help.

Charles' father's name was HENRY SMITH, a joiner of 4 Lubeck Street (probably Wandsworth).  Street searches have been unsuccessful.

Thank you again, fingers crossed!

lubeck St is listed in Booths survey in Battersea

I had no luck positively identifying Charles in the censuses last night but will have another go today.

What was Charles's occupation when he married and who were the witnesses?  Do you have him on any census after his marriage? Can you also tell us when he married and to whom?

Although Charles's address at marriage was Lubeck Street that would not necessarily be his father' address.

Still on the hunt!

I think I've found them in 1891. I searched using the girls names as they are the most unusual - I looked for a Mabel and Blanche in the same household.

Living at : 1, York Place, Hammersmith, St Pauls, London.
Surname all smith
Henry aged 32 Carpenter born Southhampton
wife Annie same age born Newport Pagnell
son Charles W aged 9 born Chiswick
daughter Blanche age 7 born Chiswick
daughter Ethel age 5 born Chiswick
Alfred age 3 born Hammersmith
Mabel age 1 born Hammersmith

In the second quarter of 1891 there is a Mabel Jane Smith born Fulham (Fulham district covers Hammersmith).

Going to see if I can see them in 1901 and to see if Edward is born after 1891.

Hazel That looks good!  Perhaps Chiswick and Ipswich got muddled  :)

In 1901 they are on RG13 piece 452 folio 139 page 1. All looks fairly smilar - no Edward (maybe it's Alfred). Henry has changed his birth place to Luton though... ???

I have loads of work to do and I am borrowing ny partner's laptop as mine has died so I haven't got time to type out the 1901 info as I don't have time to be on here really.  :P Would anyone mind puttign the details on for Navigator?

I know what Smiths are like, my Smith decided to call himself J. Smith on all censuses - took me a while to sort that one out. At least this famly have used 2 slightly mroe unusual names for the girls which helps.

In 1901 there is also a Charles Smith aged 19 a Wood Worker born Chiswick.  He is a visitor in the household of George Boucher at No 8 Marl Street Wandsworth.

Ref is RG13  483 f  51

Was this the family of his future wife?
