Gads Hill Area
« on: Saturday 07 March 09 18:39 GMT (UK) »
Hi

Does anyone know where 'The Victory' used to be in Gads Hill, Gillingham.  I have just found some work house records for my great great grandfather and in 1915 he was admitted from The Victory.  I am assuming this was a pub?

Any help would be much appreciated.

KPM

Edit:  I've just read a recent thread which mentions the Victory so I now know ifs def a pub - just need to know where now!

Kelly's Directory of Kent for 1913 (available on www.historicaldirectories.org) lists all the pubs named Victory in Kent.  They're in Kingsdown, Barming, Strood, Gravesend, Tovil and Sheerness.  Assuming it's the Strood one you want as that's closest to Gadshill, the address of the Victory tavern was 23 High Street, Strood and the licensee was J.C. Costin.

Hope this helps.

Hi Ruth

Many thanks for your reply.  I don't think the one in Strood is the one I'm after although it seems strange that its not listed in Kelly's.

The record specifically states 'The Victory Gads Hill' - so I'm sure it must have been in Gillingham.

Thanks again for your time

Hi Anne-Marie

I was confusing Gadshill which is a place next to Strood and on the opposite bank of the Medway from Gillingham with Gads Hill which now appears to be a roundabout within Gillingham.

Hope you find the answer soon.

If it was a licensed premises, I would have thought it should appear somewhere in the licensing registers which are online

I've found it in the 1901 census - document reference RG 13/733 f.29 p.27.

The enumerator recorded "The Victory" Gads Hill, Gillingham after no. 43 Gads Hill (licensed victualler: Arthur Henry A Hart - I think).  Then came two buildings referred to as Victory Cotes (Cottages).  Then 47, 49, 51 etc. Gads Hill.

Comparing the enumerator's route with an 1898 map on old-maps.co.uk and a modern Google map, I think the location of the pub would be on Pier Road near the corner with Dial Road.

Hi Casalguidi and Ruth

Sorry for the delay in responding to you - my lap top has been in for repairs (felt like I'd lost my right hand ;) )so I've only just read your replies.

I couldn't find anything on the licensing registers but Ruth's find on the 1901 census really does help.  I know the area and can just about picture where it would have been.  I'll have a chat with my Dad and see whether he remembers it but have a suspicion it probably closed well before his time.

Thanks for all your help

Hi Anne-Marie

1953 Kellys shows Victory Inn (Pub. Edward Lewis Spratt) at 45 Gad's Hill. Next to it are 1&2 Victory Cottages, before it resumes at 47.
